What are your guys thoughts on a nice leupold 4-12x50 scope. I want to know is it worth 500 dollars or mind as well just upgrade to vx3. Just want some thoughts on it.

Welcome to the Hide. In order for us to help you, we need some more information on what you're going to do with it, what your budget is, and what your expectations/needs are. Do you need adjustable turrets? Mil or moa? What type of reticle are you looking for? How far and with what setup are you going to be shooting? Hunting or paper punching? Varmint or big game?

There's MANY members who can tell you first hand experience and advice on optics. We need a direction though.

I like Leupold, the good thing is you can purchase a used scope and it is covered.

As above, we need to know what type of shooting you will be doing, and rifle.

Now if this is going on a hunting rifle, do you really need 4-12? Do you really need 50mm?

If you are hunting on the prairie then, a 4-12x50 will help with those longer shots and close to dusk shooting. In the woods the high mag will be a pain in the ass. The field of view will horrible, also the 50mm obj will cause you to mount the scope higher and you will need a higher comb on your stock for a good cheek weld.

Now from VX1/VX2 up to VX3 you are getting better glass and coatings, The VX3 has a neat range ring that allows you to bracket a deer and get a decent range estimation.

Personally I like a lower mag scope, but if you are scoping a new Remington, Winchester, savage sporting rifle, a VX3 2.5-8 with CDS will cover most hunting scenarios. Scope it once and be done.
