Do these track? Are they accurate/dependable? I am looking at 2 of the VX5HDs for my sporter weight deer rifles. Shots will be under 400, and minute of white tail. I haven't had bad luck with Leupolds when I needed a light weight set it and forget scope. Typically shots will be well under 200 but I am getting some properties that might require a poke across a field. Is the 100ish upgrade for that turret worth it?

I just put one on my VX5HD I sighted in changed the turret and was hitting the 200 and 300 yard targets at the range easily so I say yes they are worth it. Target was 100 Yards.

I think the turret goes from 100 to about 1150 Yards with the Hornady 143 ELDX 6.5 Creedmoor factory ammo.

I am in slightly the same dilemma, I built a dasher for a kid to hunt with, bought a 2nd scope, vx3i with a cert to have a turret made. It's still not cool enough here to gather dope for hunting weather, so I'm still contemplating doing one. One thought I have, if we have time to range a deer, we have time to dial the scope, I think the turning of knob part will be the same?
We have a 400 yard and in limit with the dasher.

If I remember right, the CDS equipped Leupolds have an exposed MOA elevation turret. Getting the CDS turret adds range markings above the MOA markings.

Leupold also sells end-user installable MOA and MIL turrets that can be added to capped 'finger click' turrets without the CDA. They're referred to as S1 (MOA) and S5 (mil) and aren't mentioned anywhere except for a magazine articles a few years ago. Idk why Leupold doesn't advertise them - it seems like a good idea.

For a hunting rifle the leupold VX5 and VX6 HD are a great choice. The CDS is a nice touch and since you get one free its a no brainer. I currently have a VX3 i on my 300 win mag, a VX5 HD on my AR10 and a VX6HD on my 6mm creedmoore. All have been tested for tracking and repeatability and all have done well. Reticles are level and the optics are very clear, the 5&6 are an obvious step up from the VX3. I could have been lucky with these three or leupod may have put a little more effort into tracking and reticles lately. I used to have a NXS 5.5-22 x56 on my 6mm but it was just too heavy and large for the rest of the rifle so I put the leupold VX6HD on there. I will say when comparing the vx6 and the older NXS the leupold was sharper and more clear. The NXS was more durable no doubt as it felt like it too but i was impressed with the clarity of the leupold.
