My local gun shop is a Leupold dealer and today he offered me what I think might be a pretty good deal. He has a NIB 12-40X60mm Gold Ring spotter (black) that's last years model, and has been discontinued as it doesn't have that new "HD" coating. He's asking $700 out the door for it. Opinions? I've been making due with low-end spotting scopes before now, and would like to move up in the world a bit

Re: Leupold spotter

Is that not the going street price without the HD glass? I am a Leupy fan, never failed me since mid 70s but when I compared spotters, I was not impressed but I am not a guru. The Nikon for the same price, $759 at Sportsman's was far superior to my unguru eye.

Re: Leupold spotter

I like mine. There are more clear spotters out there that is for sure, but it lets me see bullet holes out to around 400m. You can't see much further than this anyway because of mirage, even with a $3000 spotter. The advantage of the more expensive is that the mirage is easier to read. There are some great reviews out there to look at for them. The Nikons are a little better and they are cheaper too. I went with the luepold for the resale and durabililty. That is a pretty good deal there you are looking at.

Sorry, I sure thought when I looked at spotters last year at SW, the Luepy with HD was quoted $999 that they did not have and standard glass was around $799 which they had, maybe they had them mismarked. I only remember because they guy there said take a look through the Nikon, same price but better glass.

Good luck

Re: Leupold spotter

If it's for hauling around in your hunting pack that's an OK deal but As I researched spotting scopes I found out that the best spotter for the money was the Pentax 80MM ED for around a $1000.It was as clear or almost as clear to some people in the tests as Zeiss,Swaro,Leica.

Oh hell, we both know that cabelas and SWFA can be pretty damned high. You're probably remembering right.

I'm looking into both the Nikon and the Pentax, but I'd really rather buy locally so I can see what I'm getting. We shal see...
