I am settling on the Leupold mark 4 4.5 - 14 x 50mm scope with TMR recticle. I have a few questions regarding this scope that I hope some of you can answer for me. This scope is going on my recently aquired Rem 700 AAC-SD rifle.

1) I need to know what Badger rings height I need for this scope so it is as close to the barrel as possible, Do I need standard or medium rings from Badger as I have a Badger 20 moa rail it is going on?

2) Please explain the real difference between the Mil-Dot and TMR recticle? I like the tmr better because the lines are smaller than the MD and I am wondering if the TMR is a mil/mil scope or an moa/moa scope? I am looking at the M1 turret model?

And finally anything else any of you can add about this scope that would help me out? Thanks Scot..

The TMR is not a Mil/Mil scope, it is a Mil reticle. The TMR refers only to the reticle. TMR stands for Tactical Milling Reticle. The difference between the Mil Dot and the TMR is that you get thinner lines instead of dots with the TMR.

The M1 turret is a 1/4 MOA turret which does not make this a Mil/Mil scope, because you have a Mil Reticle with MOA adjustments.

Leupold does have a Mark 4 M5 series. The M5 turrets are .1 Mil adjustments. When you get M5 turrets with the TMR reticle, you get a Mil/Mil scope. Most of the M5's are FFP glass as well. Here are some pics of the TMR reticle in a 6.5-20x Mark 4 M5 FFP scope at 20X (disclaimer-photo images don't always look as good as seeing it in person):

Re: Leupy MK4 4.5-14 w/ TMR & Badger ring questions?

I have several of Leupy MilDot Scopes and 1 MK4 3.5-10x40 M3 with TMR reticle. Between the 2 reticles I will be buying scopes with the TMR in the future. I really like the hash marks because it allows for somewhat more accurate ranging on principle due to a line vs dot. The 1/2 mil tic marks provide even more accurate becuase there's no guessing, if its half a mil, its half a mil. One other aspect that is awesome is the open center of the reticle. At first I wasn't sure if I would like it but it gives me a more accurate point of aim.
Bottom line do your homework and find your dope and this reticle should serve you nicely.

I have the same scope mounted on a Rem. 700. With the 0 MOA flat Leupold MK IV bases, I needed Leupold MKIV high rings. I put the same scope on a 700 using EGW 1 piece 20 MOA base and I needed low EGW rings. The EGW 20 MOA base is a higher sitting base.

If I were you, I'd call Badger and ask. Likely, you should be able to use the standard rings, but to get the lowest possible ring, I'd call them. The bases you use can make a difference, that's all I wanted to point out to you.

I'm also a big fan of the TMR reticle.

called Badger and they said go with the med rings. I think I could have gotten away with the standards but he said medium rings so that is what I ordered today..
