Ideas for a light mountain folder, short action?

I was thinking an XLR chassis, short action, 6.5mm x 22" (open to barrel mfg suggestions/contour). Magazine fed.

I'd like a lightweight, folding rifle that can hold decent accuracy for 5-8 shots in a 2 minute period. Open to suggestions on action, barrel, stocks etc.

Also, is there a minimum barrel length other than 16" when building a rifle with a folding stock?

If you want it really light I would look at the XLR carbon chassis. 3ls 6oz I believe. You could go a little shorter on the barrel if you went with a permanently attached Surefire brake.

Why not just use a manners 90% carbon folder?

If it was me, I would use that and a 20" carbon wrapped barrel on a stiller tac 30aw or surgeon 591.

Length is measured with the stock extended per ATF, so it doesn't matter whether you have a folding or fixed stock.

Unless you live in a crazy state like MI where we measure it by shortest operable configuration. Below 30" is a pistol... about to change to below 26". Point being, verify it meets the sometimes wacky state laws too

Looking at Manners website, their folder is quite a bit heavier than the XLR... But everything is a tradeoff I suppose.

I like the way your thinking on the barrel. I'll need to hunt one up.

Go with a #4 contour, like Bartlein's heavy sporter. The other barrels are simply way too light.

Thanks! This is an area where I don't have enough experience to pick a contour - I've only had 'tactical' contour barrels, so I was just guessing...

I was thinking about a carbon wrap, but it seems like there may have been some industry changes there... ABS appears to have sold their tech, is the same barrel work being done? Can you order a krieger or rock with an ABS "2.0" wrap?

One day I plan to do this same thing. I was going to use a CTR stock with riser. Leupold 1-6 maybe. It would make for a really nice med weight packable rifle. As Graham mentioned, #4, I was going to do a taper to be .750 at the muzzle, or whatever would allow for 5/8x24 threads.

It's quite spendy but have you considered the Eberlestock folder? Seems perfect for the type of build you're describing.

I'd take a look at Arms Tech Limited TTR-700 Tactical Take Down Rifle.

I have yet to see a precision rifle that is smaller in form factor. Then again, with the right folding stock and a Remington 788, you could have a heck of a nice small rifle.

Of course, at a shorter length a light barrel will be stiffer, but one must also consider the balance of the rifle with the scope on it versus the minimal weight savings from the diameter of the steel tube.

Moon is building me a lightweight 6xc. I want it to be able to easily shoot ten-shot strings like the ones so prevalent in Zak's matches. Initially I couldn't decide between a Bartelin sporter and a heavy sporter ( http://www.bartleinbarrels.com/contours.htm ). Due to availability I went with a Rock #4, which finishes at about .650 at the muzzle - like a Bartlein heavy sporter. It's probably half a pound heavier than the next lightest barrel, but it should balance the rifle better when I have a two pound scope on top of it.

Hopefully that extra half-pound won't break me next year at the adventure challenge.
