Looking for a light weight barrel. I want a quality barrel, but it doesn't have to be top of the line. Any suggestion on manufactures? Also would it be worth getting a 14.5 inch compared to a 16 inch? I know you have to have the flash hider pinned or welded, but if it would save weight it may be worth it. Overall I'm just try to build a very light weight AR. No carbon fiber uppers or lowers. Just want to see what can be done. Maybe a carbon fiber handgaurd. Thanks for any help in advance. I hope I posted this in the right forum.

I have yhm barrel and carbine length handguard no flash hider. Its very light and easily carried around with one hand. The barrel has yhm spiral fluting. I think there in the 175 price range

Daniel Defense! Their V7 LW complete AR weighs in around 5.5 lbs. You can by the LW barrel by it self in 14.5 or 16". If weight is your main concern I'd go with the 14.5

keep in mind that the skinnier the barrel, the faster heat soak will cause it to warp and the fewer rounds you can fire before your POA changes.
That said, get the 16" being able to change your muzzle device might be a good thing down the road..... Say you want a suppressor? Don't want to run two sets of paperwork and pay for two tax stamps on the SBR and the suppressor?

I would get the daniel defense mid length 16" it is the best all-around carbine barrel that you can buy.
edit: should also say a price range as some people on this forum have S&B on .22 rifles...

Have you looked at Noveske's Skinny Carbine? Their complete upper only weighs 4 pounds.

Your biggest difference will come from the contour... A lightweight 16" will be lighter than a standard 14.5". The shorter barrels obviously put your balance point a little farther back, which makes the front end "feel" lighter.
Getting a 14.5" lightweight would be your best bet, but as stated it does limit you to changing parts later on if you don't SBR it. After going both routes, I'd recommend a 16" unless you know exactly what you want.

I built a lightweight 18" barrel for my coyote rifle with a .675" diameter gas block and a tapered barrel under the handguards...it is a flyweight and I was pleasantly suprised with the accuracy as it shoots at about 3/4 MOA. The barrel was a button rifled Rock blank that I hand lapped. For such a light barrel I am very happy with it.

I just build a LW upper using a Rock River lightweight mid length chrome lined barrel and could not be happier with it. The barrel shoots very well ( I purchased it used off the Hide).

Skinny under the handguard but a full profile outside the handguards. I found it to be more accurate than the Colt pencil barrel.
