I just got my 270 WSM from the gunsmith. I had it built for a lightweight long range hunting rifle. I think I found my load today too! This is the smallest 3 shot 100 yard group I've ever fired.....

Specs;
Remington 700 SA trued
AZ Precision bolt knob
tuned factory trigger
27" fluted #4 Lilja
1-10 twist
HS Precision pro series stock
matte black Cerekote
rifle is 7 lbs exactly (no scope)

Still waiting on my new optics but the old Vari-x III is fine for now.

My load;

270 WSM
140 gr Accubond
66gr Reloader 22
Fed 215GM
Win brass
COL 2.825"

Later,

Doug

No, it's three... It's written in the description...

Re: Lightweight Long Range Hunter

Not to be a buzkill, but yor calipers actually read 0.556, not 0.456. Subtracting the diameter of the bullet is also not technically correct on a group that size.

Still, an incredible group and I'm impressed.

Great shooting and it's a nice setup.

You were right about the .556 but how is the subtracting the bullet diameter wrong on a group "that size"?

I always thought you subtracted the bullet diameter as well to compensate for what you are actually wanting to compare which is center impact to center impact of the shots in the group..

Re: Lightweight Long Range Hunter

Not to split hairs, but click on the picture of the group to enlarge it. Then read the caliper. Last time I checked it read .456", and not .556"..... This is, unless I am missing something.....

Editted to add: The markings on the caliper read "0,1,2,3,4, and the dial is set at .056"

Re: Lightweight Long Range Hunter

another hair splitting .... 3 shots does not a group make and also violates the rules of this forum for posting targets

Still a good "group" to me hahahaha

Re: Lightweight Long Range Hunter

nomatter what the group size you always subtract the caliber because then you get the exact center to center deviation. Also, sorry more hair splitting, but if you were doing this in MOA you could divide the initial measurement by 1.047 (since that really is 1 MOA at 100 yards). This would make your group .158 moa (.159 if you rounded it). Either way, congrats on the set up and the good shooting.

If you were doing it MOA, you need to make all calcuations, then convert. Otherwise, you would need to calc your bullet at MOA at a specified distance too. What you are proposing is mixing MOA + Inches in the same calcuation.

0.456 (which we now know is wrong) = 0.436 MOA
0.277 @ 100 yards = 0.265 MOA
C to C group = 0.171 MOA

Just using group size (again wrong) of 0.179 / 1.047 = 0.171.

No 0.158 or 0.159 to be had....

Re: Lightweight Long Range Hunter

Thanks for the input and nice comments guys. I don't get to carried away with the numbers, I just wanted some reference in the photo. I'm sure the stars were alligned just right that day for me to pull it off....

These were rounds 16, 17, and 18 out of the rifle. This also happened to be the pet load I was shooting in the rifle when it was an unmolested factory SPS. So I was jacked that I didn't have to do any load development. I'll be loading up some more rounds soon and can't wait to see what kind of repeatable accuracy I can get.

Thanks,

Doug

I thought so too, until I reviewed the rules

I agree, the 1/10th marker isn't to the "5" yet. Some of the guys on here need glasses.

Re: Lightweight Long Range Hunter

They are still in place on the board rules when I view them on my computer. I also think that this rifle can shoot good enough to do well on the dot drill regardless.

Re: Lightweight Long Range Hunter

My bad if I violated some sort of rules about what you can post pics of. I guess I should do a little reading first next time. I really meant for the rifle to be the main pic, but I couldn't figure out how to switch them around. I'll have to give that dot drill a try.
