Been doing some searching for a while but can seem to get comfortable behind my AR. Anybody got any good links for shooting the AR maybe as it differs from bolt guns.

Thanks.

Re: Links to learn how to shoot the AR?

I don't have a single link but for one the AR is the most comfortable rifle to shoot from IMHO. Why don't you put a picture of your setup and maybe we can let you know how to fix any issues you may have with your setup.

Re: Links to learn how to shoot the AR?

A .308 AR is uncomfortable and difficult to shoot well in my experience. I greatly prefer a bolt gun. I had an AR10 just long enough to confirm that I could learn to shoot it well. They require an extra level of perfection than a bolt gun. Then I sold it.

There are two videos about shooting an AR in the online training on this site.

Re: Links to learn how to shoot the AR?

I don't find them particularly "uncomfortable" to shoot. I do find them difficult to shoot well w/o some significant concentration regarding the amount of bipod preload and shoulder "crush" to handle the recoil impulses compared to a bolt gun. I use mine for a training tool to improve my bolt gun skills. As Lindy says the "extra level of perfection" required to drive one well assists in my recognition of small irregularities when driving a bolt gun. Of course shooting an air rifle will achieve the same results with less expenditure of powder.

Cheers,

Doc

I agree with the above. The gas gun just requires extra attention to the fundamentals.

I do PREFER to shoot the bolt gun, but if a multiple target situation presents itself in a non-permissive environment I would much rather have the AR10 with me. That thing is AMAZING when you start rocking plates with it as fast as you can pull the trigger.

Re: Links to learn how to shoot the AR?

I had a similar experience this last Friday. I've never had much trouble shooting a bolt gun accurately. Friday I took a couple new AR10's to the range (met some SH members for the first time) and was very humbled by the experience. My 20" is what I consider a very good build...AR10T 24" Walther Lothar, cut and re-crowned to 20", trued receiver, PRS stock, nice 4# trigger, Harris, Falcon 4x14, etc. Should be a sub moa gun, and after the day I imagine it is, just not quite yet with me at the wheel. While I did manage one group probably just over 1", I was typically all over the place. Interestingly enough, I had no trouble rocking the steel at 600yds, but settle down and try to shoot a group at 100...not on that day. Definitely took more concentration and more technique, what with shooting a pistol grip, off the bipod, and with the AR's multiple recoils.
Great learning experience for sure and something I look forward to improving on.
My .02

I'm actually wanting to sell it to buy a bolt gun again......

RR 2 stage trigger
WOA 18" 1/7 barrel

In reality my biggest problem is consistency. The rifle shoots under and inch at 100 I just dont feel comfortable behind it. In fact I got a 1 inch 200 yard group with it last week using 69SMK's.

I was just hoping there was a good right up somewhere on semi-auto technique compared to a bolt gun.

I think a big part of it is that 90% of my shooting is done with a 1911 shooting USPSA and IDPA. So when I get a pistol grip in my hand I want a really high hold and firm grip. This moves my hand way out of position for the trigger and I can see the gun recoiling sideways somewhat.

</div></div>There was a quick vid (don't even remember where I saw it...maybe utube) of Lowlight giving some tips on the AR platform, and he addressed that exact issue. Not to get too high on the grip so that your trigger finger was coming straight back, and also not "dragging wood" (not riding on the side fo the receiver/grip area). He also mentioned that the AR's have three recoils to deal with...two rearward, and one forward. I was reminded this last trip to also load the bipod by leaning into it a little, and to follow through with the trigger pull. I don't think I fired two shots the same way all day. I was having a hard time getting the rifle to come straight back, too. I really like the SA/AR platform, and like the challenge of becoming proficient. Lots to think about, but it's a matter of just shooting, shooting, and more shooting and making sure you're not repeating bad habits...like anything else.

I just watched that video on the main SH page. Very interesting stuff that I'd never thought of before, and will have to put it to use on my next trip to the range.

Gotta get signed up for the online training, since the little bits I've seen have been extremely helpful!

Re: Links to learn how to shoot the AR?

If its a comfort behind the gun issue try a different stock. I have a similar rifle but with an A1 stock. It's about 5/8" shorter than the A2. It made a big difference to me. Costs a lot less than a PRS.
