Living around Fort Benning / Columbus Georgia

Well... looks like I am off to the Fort Benning area come the 1st of the year. I've never been to Georgia and have no clue on good areas to live around the base. My wife and I would like to find a house (to rent) that is outside the downtown area and maybe has at least an acre of land. I'd like to be able to at least shoot air rifle in the back yard to practice off-hand shooting. (my air rifles are 10 meter Olympic rifles... slow fps and very quiet).

The wife wants chickens. Kind of silly, but that is what she wants.

I am also open to living on the Alabama side as well. What I am hoping is that I can get some 1st hand info on what areas are nice, and what areas to avoid. North of base, south of base... east, west... what ever.

Maybe I should fly out there for a weekend and just get a feel for the area.

I am not excited about trading the Rocky Mountains and Colorado for the swamps. Oh well. Such is life.

I think you'll find Columbus is a great area. I don't remember it being swampy. I grew up in Albany, GA myself.

That is good to know. One thing is for sure, I'll be trading hunting coyotes and prairie dogs for hunting for pigs.

I'm really trying to keep positive about this move. It is tough to leave Colorado though. I just have to keep reminding myself it is temporary, and that I get to explore another corner of America.

Right now the biggest stress is finding the right area to live in.

If you want an acre or more that is close to the post look south toward Cusseta and Buena Vista (pronounced Byoo-na Vissta; the printed words look Spanish but pronunciation has been thoroughly Southernized).

Thank you guys. I may go ahead and fly out in a couple weeks and check it all out. Right now it is just Google maps and rummaging through the home rental websites.

The wife first tried to convince me that we should get a studio loft in town. Not happen'n. I need a reloading and gun room at least. Besides, I don't like the idea of packing my guns in and out of a joint like that.

I like the Buena Vista idea. Plus that is closer to Fort Valley Gun Club where I'll probably do a lot of my shooting. That and at the on base range.

Well, back to researching.

Check out the Fort Benning Rifle and Pistol club there on Range Road. The range has target points to 500 yards. Also, the range officer Mr. James McQuien is an AMU service rifle champion from the 70's who is very helpful. Enjoy!

Yep, that is the first thing I am doing is joining the Rifle and Pistol Club. Bummer the you can't shoot steel there, but that's not a big deal.

Ga is a fine place to live. You will find plenty of places to spread your wings around Columbus.
