lmt MWS range reports

I'd like to see if we can get some range reports, and range reports only on the LMT MWS. The other thread is now 10 pages long, some of it has degraded into rants, and there are very few reports of the weapon.

I get my MWS out of DROS in 4 days and will post my own report shortly afterward.

From initial reports this gun seems to be very accurate for a out of the box factory Semi with a 16" barrel, but I'd like to see a few more targets and some chrony data if anyones got some.

Malaysian 147 gr ball surplus 2550 fps 3-4 inch groups

Scope was an ACOG TA11-HG, I dont care for the 2moa center dot

The chrome lined barrel

DAG 6+ MOA
Black Hills 168 Match two 5 round, 1 4 round 1.5 MOA groups.

I am out of practice, and fired the BH at a moderate rate of fire. I'm sure the rifle can do better. Maybe I will see after I get it back from the company.

I finally got mine to the range. It was a windy day, but steady on the nose. I was using factory Winchester ammo. I also had a Nightforce 8 x 32 x 56 scope.

The ammo was military M80 145 grain FMJ lead core.

I got the MWS sighted in at 50 yards in five shots, the last 3 almost in the same hole after it was dialed in. I moved out to 100 yards expecting more of the same. Than the wheels fell off.

I would put three within 3/4 of an inch, and than a flier, sometimes off by more than 4 inches. It seemed the first shot was always way off from the rest of the pack, but the gun just never settled in. As I shot it more, the groups became more inconsistant. Maybe it was the ammo, or the wind, or the scope wasn't tight...I am not sure which. I didn't chrony the loads, which I wll do next time out.

I am going to work up some nice match grade loads with some 165 and 175 grain bullets and give it another try in two weeks.

I doubt it was the wind as my AR put up less than 1" groups consistantly but with amax 75 grain bullets and TAC at 24 grains.

I am a bit shocked by the results.

I'm very pleased with mine. I changed the SOPMOD for an A2 and I'm using a Super Sniper 3-9 Scope with GG&G mounts. My "go to load" is M118LR or an equivalent hand load consisting of LC brass with Fed GMM primers, SMK 175, 43.2 grains of RL15 both of which run at 2470 fps.

With around count of over 900 rounds using 20 different loads I've come to the conclusion that this rifle (mine is chrome lined) can shoot most ammo more accurately than most battle rifles and is capable of very good accuracy with select loads. I've read half a dozen reports where some one has taken their new $2,400.00 LMT with its $1,500.00 scope out and shot Russian steel jacketed round or surplus ammo out of it and expected miracles. Ain't gonna happen. Get good match ammo take a deep breath, settle down and follow the fundamentals. I think some of the expectations were generated by an article in a magazine showing a .82 target using American Eagle or Winchester White Box,(see link).

Mine hovers right at an inch or less with M118LR, BH 175gr and 168gr match and various other loads. I haven't had anything shoot over 1.5" including some de-linked machine gun ammo. Two of my handloads with using 175 SMK will break 3/4" consistanly(Black Hills match brass filled with either 42.5gr Varget or 42.2gr 4064). The fine mil-dot in the NF 2.5-10X33 I have mounted helps in shooting groups. I like the rifle a whole bunch.

Has anyone else noticed a cold bore on this rifle? Mine has a very distinct cold bore shot. 11 o'clock, 1".

I noticed my first shot was off a bit too, but I don't remember the angle. I'm headed out thursday and will make a note to verify the first shot variance

Something to remember with a gasser.It chambers the first round much differently then the rest.

Yeah I hear that. That's why I single feed them for load development to try and eliminate variables. Always a good reminder though. Also the gun cycles different on an empty mag as well.

I load 175 SMK to 2.75-2.80 OAL. The gun doesn't seem to care that much.

I put 40 rounds of Hornandy gilded 165 gr bullets in front of 43 grains of TAC. At 100 yards it was not very hard to hold less than 1". With 42 grains of TAC it was more like 2". I used IMI match grade brass, new...and also run of the mill winchester once fired brass..no difference between the brass.

I load them all to 2.790 OAL, with no crimps as they were tight as hell anyway.

Velocity was around 2545 but I shot the chrony after five rounds so I can't say for sure...I will report back a bit later on that.

I also noticed the groupings didn't have any fliers if they were all chambered from the magazine...magazine fed worked better than single fed rounds.

How were the terminal balistics on the croney? I know for a fact that a 9mm 115g HP will kill one.

16" CL @ 1k yards, plate is 20" horizontally, not a lot of vertical dispersion, winds were 3-5 at 10:30, 39.75 MOA w/175smk and varget

This load is too hot but it shoots good. Im backing it down to the next node. BTW the 175gr SMK can be loaded really close to the lands and fit mag length. This is the chrome lined barrel. 5 shots including cold bore at 100. Cold bore is not the bottom hole. Its in there with the other 4. I will try it again tomorrow at 300 and 100 with different loads. Powder is XBR, win case, 210M. OAL is 2.840. Its close but feeds out of the mag.

I found 45.0 of RL-15 to be a bit warm in the LC brass, in my rifle

I found 45.0 of RL-15 to be a bit warm in the LC brass, in my rifle

I haven't been able to chrony the load yet as I shot the chrony rod on shot #2 the prior trip, and the Thanksgiving trip to Angeles Range was so windy we couldn't get the chrony tripod to stay put. The diffusers acted like sails, and with gusts to over 35 mph it was a mess. The 43 grain TAC load behind a Hornandy 165 GMX bullet did shoot below 1 moa at 100 yards, even with the nightmare conditions. Our 223 loads didn't hold target that well!! I promise I will get some chrony data up ASAP.

My mixed-LC brass 42.5Varget/2.8 COAL loads shoot MOA out of my buddy's LMT. If you're using win brass try a shorter COAL (2.78) and 42, 43, and 44 grains varget.

Anyone have any range reports for the SS barrel and match loads? I'm still interested in this rifle and still waffling over this or the [censored]. I know what the [censored] can do, but am interested in seeing some more data points on the LMT. The LMT looks very promising and so far is leading my personal race for the ability to swap barrels easily. But I'd like to see some range reports with the SS barrel.
