hey guys,

Later on this week, I will be switching to 178 grain amaxes in my trg 22. I'm also changing my powder from imr 4064 to varget. In my load book (nosler), it doesn't show a 178g option, but it shows a 42-46 grain varget load for the 168g BTHP and a 41-44g varget load for a 180 grain bullet. These loads were all tested at a 2.800 OAL.

After doing a quick search, it looks like the trg 22 can support up to a 2.900~ OAL, but I was wondering if the powder load limits would be different considering there is now a .1 inch difference in the seating depth. Would 44 grains still be the upper limit considering a 180g bullet is moving at 2591 FPS with a 44g varget load? Since my load book doesn't define an upper limit at this OAL, I thought I would ask to see what you trg owners who run a longer OAL run as far as powder loads.

Re: load question for a sako trg using 178g amaxes

Hogdon web site list max of 45grns as max for 180grn bullet. This has been a good load in a couple of my rifles, none of which are trg's though, and only running 2.810 OAL

ALWAYS work up slowly looking for pressure!

Re: load question for a sako trg using 178g amaxes

My TRG22 chamber measured 2.286 to the lands. I'd check yours to make sure you're not hitting them at 2.900. I've worked loads past the recommended max when using an OAL of 2.870 and using the same bullet. Don't forget to take new bullet length into consideration when working up your loads.

My Lyman reloading manual has the 178gr AMsx maxed at 44gr of Varget with the OAL at 2.780". Watch for signs of pressure when working up your loads.
