Thanks for that. I've read the comparison article, but not the second one about the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I'm thinking that I'll just go for the 6.5x47 and have done with it!

I like the idea of having something unusual (well it is here in the UK) and my mate has some of the brass, plus I can get Lapua brass fairly (?*!?) cheap through him.

I'm looking for reamer spec's now.

Revisiting this, all I can say about node testing, charge increments, etc. is that its all been covered very adequately here before, and I really don't have any revolutionary process that changes anything you'll already find here. The basic stuff still works fine.

For myself, I'm taking a different path now, which involves harmonic barrel tuners. It allows me to specifically tailer loads for ballistic and bore life advantages, then adjust the barrel to shoot well with the arbitrary loads. My tuner approch is lower in cost, can be easier on the bore, and requires no actual gunsmithing. Search the site for 'buck nut tuner', and you'll get the idea.

All I'll say for now is that it appears to be very promising, and initial results are quite good on my .260 LR gun. I'll be trying it with other guns/calibers soon, starting with a ten year old box-stock M700 VLS .223.

From a friend with some considerable experience hunting with a 260:

I've tried every powder under the sun, these worked for me.

For deer and elk it's a 130 Swift Sirocco and 45.5 grains of H4350. I loaded them to 2,900 fps.
130 Barnes should work well too.

For 120's use 45.5 grains of w760. The hit 3,000 fps.


For 140 Nosler Partition's I loaded 51 grains of RL25 in once fired cases for 2,800 fps. This would be a heck of an elk load.

For 85 grain HP's use RL15. One hole groups.

Well here is my new data that I shot today. This was with new Hornady brass, the cases were sorted by weight and these were the lightest group and weighed 147 gr. Fed LR Match primers. The bullets are the Hornady 140 gr A-Max that I coated with hBN. I am using 42.8 gr of RL-17 powder. The powder was thrown on a Pact powder dispenser. The barrel is a Rock 26” 1 in 8 twist with only 25 rd shot through it before this group of 10. Temp was 61. BP was 24.91

The cases look exactly like my previous post but those cases had been fired 4 times working up. You will notice that in my previous post that the speed are in the 2900 range. I think that is because the barrel was just cleaned so they shoot just a little faster till it get enough hBN in it to make it run better. You will notice the ES and SD dropped on the second group of 10.

All of the shots were taken one right after the other with no cool down or stoping and waiting between shots. The barrel didn't heat up much though. It feels like RL-17 shoots cool. After 10 rds you could put your hand on the barrel without a problem.

Update on the buck nut tuner.

Not the miracle cure I once believed it to be. The spoiler is that the tuner goes out of tune very signficantly when the outdoor temperatures swing.

What seemed to be very quick and easy the first time I made it work soon became a serious chore, and waste of ammo and bore life when I found myself trying to get the sucker back into tune for about the tenth time.

I'm hearing that this is not the case with .22's, but I'm finding out for myself that for my centerfire rifles, the two (.260 and .223) that I tried it on seem to do better without the tuner in the long run.

Like Edison said, we just found another new way how not to make a lightbulb.

Sorry 105 gr amax. I was using 100 gr. pspbt but 29.5 gr is correct. I took it to 31.5 the 33.5 but but both opened up to an inch or better. Will using a lower charge save my barrel?

I shot the following loads through my 260 Remington, M700SA, HTG-ADJ, 26" Kreiger Heavy Palma 1x8'', Jewell, Wyatts Extended Box Magazine, Williams Bottom Metal, Farrell Base, NF Rings, NXS 5.5x22x50ZS. Built by WN Roscoe at Louisiana Precision Rifles.

(Load 1) per Quick Load should have generated a MV of 2886 FPS. But the MV was chronographed at 2760 FPS, 2749 FPS, 2724 FPS. The load was 140 VLD, 43.3- H4350, 243 Lapua Brass turned and sized, CCIBR, 2.940" COAL This 3 shot group measured 0.30" outside.

(Load 2) per Quick Load should have generated a MV of 2861 FPS. But the MV was chronographed at 2799 FPS, 2813 FPS, 2796 FPS. The load was 140 VLD, 46.9-RE22, 243 Lapua Brass turned and sized, CCIBR, 2.940" COAL This 3 shot group measured 0.90" outside.

(Load 3) per Quick Load should have generated a MV of 2828 FPS. But the MV was chronographed at 2729 FPS, 2719 FPS, 2751 FPS. The load was 140 VLD, 46.5-H4831SC, 243 Lapua Brass turned and sized, CCIBR, 2.940" COAL This 3 shot group measured 0.80" outside.

(Load 4) per Quick Load should have generated a MV of 3203 FPS and the MV was chronographed at 3148 FPS, - 3208 FPS. The load was 100 Nosler Balistic Tip, 42.5-IMR 4064, 243 Lapua Brass turned and sized, CCIBR, 2.850" COAL This 3 shot group measured 0.90" outside.

Mr. Roscoe builds very accurate rifles and is a good guy to work with.

I'd work with this, or pick a starting point for R17 and H414 to try. Also, call Hodgdon and Alliant to see what they have. Since R17 is a touch slower than H4350, you should be able to get a little more powder than H4350. 414 is a little slower than H4350, so you'll be working with a little less than the H4350 powder amount. You may need to work up loads for these powders in your rifle.

And would it be too much to ask for Ogive measurements instead of COAL, because bullet tips vary a lot.... I was just trying to load to 2.820 with 142 SMK's for my 260 and they are very different from bullet to bullet. I was getting 2.814, 2.823, 2.836, 2.810, etc...

I second the request to break out each cartridge into it's own page. There are enough of these posts that guys leave out what cartridge they are shooting and you have to know your components to read along. (Ie. knowing Hornady doesn't make .260 brass)

Not only would it clarify and make things safer, it would also freshen up them as new topics.

I have used RL17 with decent success with Berger 130gr VLD upto 2950fps, .5" group at 100yds. I can push the 130VLD to 3000fps but accuracy degrades to about 1 to 1.2".

Any info or experiences would be appreciated.

My loads for the Berger, 130VLD are COAL 2.803, Primer Rem 7-1/2
RL17 39.5gr, 2950 fps average, 5-shot group .75"
RL17 40.0gr, 2997 fps average, 5-shot group 1" or larger.

40gr RL7-1/2 is too hot for my rifle. I tried some BR-4 primers with 40gr RL17 and got less pressure signs with an average 10 fps increase, but no real improvement in accuracy. 39.5 is about the max with Rem 7-1/2 primers. Unfortunately, I have 5K of the Rem 7-1/2, but only 50 of the CCI BR-4.

Next I'll try berger 140 VLD. I am a little confused about the Berger 140's the box I have says 140 VLD with BC of .595. The Berger website says 140VLD is .615 and the 140LR is .592?

Anyway I'll report my RL17 and Berger 140VLD results next.

Alright here are my results for 6.5x47L, Berger 140VLD, RL17, 39.7gr, Rem 7-1/2 primer, COAL 2.803, Lapua Brass.

Average Group size for five 5-shot groups and 1 3-shot group is .615"
Average Velocity is 2860 FPS for 30 rounds
ES for 30 rounds 31fps
SD for 30 rounds 9.75fps.

I am going to try and attach photos. Note 39.7gr of RL17 is absolute max in my rifle due to primer cratering. I believe that the rem 7-1/2 primers are softer that other primers and if I go to 40.2 gr of RL17 I start piercing primers. Some cratering is due to too much clearance around my firing pin. Firing pin protrusion is set to .040 +/-.005. a twice fired resized case head measures .4710 to .4711. After this load the case head measures .4717 to .4718. This is within normal expansion and there are no shinny extractor marks on the case head.

So far RL-17 is the only powder I have used that can get the 140VLD up to 2850fps without piercing the Rem 7-1/2 primers. I would prefer to use CCI BR-4, but cannot acquire them at this time due to the great primer hording going on.

Here is some RL-17 for a 6.5 Creedmoor. I loaded some ammo and shot at 1000 yesterday. It took 92 clicks of 1/4 moa click to get to 1000 or 23 moa. Shooting a 140 gr berger at 23.11 bp and 77 deg that gives me about a 2875 fps with a load of 42.2 gr of RL-17. When I cronoed these loads the crono said about 2900 fps, so my crono may be off by a bit. I had an ever so slight primer flow and no marks on the brass. From my experiance the RL-17 will give just about 25fps more speed than the H4350 with about the same pressure.

My prevoius data, as seen up a couple of posts, was with a diffrent barrel. This data is with my new barrel

The 42 grain charge ran 3145fps but opened the group to 1.25moa.
Some of the opening was my fault. I was destracted by approaching a hot load.
Some have experienced this powder to fail at other distances in accuracy. I stopped because I didn't take enough brass to the range but I will shoot at 600yds next.
The bullet is made by Cauterucio, 10 caliber tangent ogive. I tried no other seating depth but might.
Groups were only three shots.
Reloader 15 and Varget shoot as accurate but 125fps slower with similar pressure signs indicated by primer extrusion, recoil and extraction.

Got a SH Valkyrie a few months back. Here is the load that I am using now. It is a Badger action with a 24" Bartlein barrel. I am using Nolser brass, CCI BR2 primers, Lapua 139 gr Scenar bullets, and 43.5 grains of H4350. The OAL is 2.860. I am getting 2850 fps.

***Will be running a couple of the loads and test for accuracy. The 38gr 107 load has been used quite a bit for 500M Varmint Silhouette matches. Very mild recoil, easy to see shots, very accurate out to 500M.
***The 2950 to 3000fps loads will be retested for accuracy at 200,300,385, and 500M. (Will have to stretch it on out afterwards though). All loads listed below are worthy of shooting the Varmint matches. I was truely amazed at how accurate the 5 shot groups looked on steel while testing these. Just didn't see anything that looked like it wouldn't really group.

All fps avg taken on at least 5 shots, if string was incomplete due to chrony issue, overcast, etc, string was retested.

***Also tested with another 8 twist Bartlien and results were very consistant 30fps faster than what is shown below. This barrel only has 200 rounds through it.

Both of the loads below were tested for accuracy at 300 and 600 yards. Very very impressive results on steel.

Good thread guys! I'm new here so lots to learn. I have a .260 Rem rifle built by GA Precision. It has a 24" M24 counter barrel made by Rock Creek and carbon fiber wrapped by ABS Inc. Lawton action with AICS mags. Nightforce 12-42x56 BR scope. I started my load development with the standard slow powders most suggest for the .260 Rem like H4831SC. I found I could totally fill the cases and not get a 140 gr bullet over 2700 fps. 130gr also were only going about 2750fps with a full case. So I decided to try some slightly faster powders. Reloader 19 gave better velocity but high SD and extreme spread, and accuracy was not there. Ramshot Hunter also was not as accurate as I want. The powder I have found to work best is Hodgdon Hybrid 100V.

Got 3000 fps 10 feet from the muzzle! 0.55 inch group, SD 7. Cases look fine, no pressure signs. Looks great. Has anybody else tried Hybrid 100V? Anybody tried Nosler .260 Rem brass?

Why do folks say that the 140 VLD is to big of a bullet for the 6.5X47L? That is what i'm planning on useing due to not being able to fine any 130 VLD's. Higher BC is always a plus. Loads useing the 140 VLD is HARD TO COME BY!!!! Anyone have any new intell???

Reloader 19 gave better velocity but high SD and extreme spread, and accuracy was not there. Ramshot Hunter also was not as accurate as I want. The powder I have found to work best is Hodgdon Hybrid 100V.

with a good load in hand for a 130gr bullet I moved to on to another goal, a top notch hunting load. I am using the 130gr Swift Scirocco II bullet on 44.5 gr of Hybrid 100V. Same case and primer. Got 3000 fps 10 feet from the muzzle! 0.55 inch group, SD 7. Cases look fine, no pressure signs. Looks great. Has anybody else tried Hybrid 100V? Anybody tried Nosler .260 Rem brass? </div></div>

I've been struggling with my .260 rifles. The 139 Scenar Black Hills load is pretty good and my reloads with combinations of 123 lapuas, 142 SMK's and 140 SMk's and H4831 and H4350 have been spotty at best.

I just picked up some H100V and some RL19 to try out.

Dragging the Chrono out tomorrow and testing some 139 Scenars in the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I've loaded 10 rounds each in new brass, Fed 210M primers, H4350 powder in these increments:

42.5 (5 rounds)
42.7
42.9
43.2
43.5
43.7

Back from the range, CM now makes me happy... The factory Hornady ammo was only getting me 2640fps, I've upped the powder charge a little, and now she's up around 2800 where it should be...

I used some 139 Scenars (thanks Mike!) and they seemed to do great.

I shot 2 5 shot groups of each loading. I suck at shooting groups, so take them with a grain of salt, but it told me what I needed to know.

I just threw 42.5 gr of powder with my Charge Master into unprepared, new brass, to make sure there were no pressure signs before I started laddering up. These 5 shots are on the top target marked "zero".

the rest of the loads had the full fussy monty done to them. Fully prepped brass, through the powder with the Charge Master, then checked it on my beam scale.

Low and behold, the first 5 I just threw and loaded had the best "numbers"...

By the time I got to the last load I was done... I couldn't tell you if the group was really that bad, or if I just ass'd it all up...

Even at 43.5 there were no real pressure signs to be concerned about... Primers looked good, and only some very faint extractor marks on the case heads.

Shot this load all year long. Best group was my son shoot in a F-Class match shot 20 shots. 15 in the x ring (3 inch) and 4 in the 10 ring and 1 9 ring. Most of the time will shoot in the 190s to 200s at 600.
