I just bought a Remington 700 SPS Tactical which sports a 20" barrel. It's an awesome rifle and was incredibly accurate right out of the box but because the SPST has a short barrel, should I be using a powder with a faster burn rate?

I used 168gr Nosler Accubond bullets with 42.7gr of H4895 for barrel break in. Had the H4895 on hand which was on the recommended list however, I noticed it was nearly the slowest burning powder of the lot. Should I be using powder like Benchmark or H322 in this case, or does it make that much difference?

Thanks in advance,

bd

Re: Loads for a short barrel .308

Varget will work fine in a 20" rifle. It's what I use in my 20" with 178 AMAX and get about 2690fps from it.

Re: Loads for a short barrel .308

i use adi ar 2208 or VARGET in my sps TAC with great results, launching the new 155 sierra palma bullet from winchester brass and FGMM primers.

about to head out and try to work up the same load but with remington brass as i have more of that then win, so should be interesting.....

what charge of varget are you using in your 20" rob??

cheers

Re: Loads for a short barrel .308

20" Shilen barreled Savage Model 10

168gr AMAX
44.1gr RE15
2.845" OAL
CCI LR Primer
Lapua Brass
AVG FPS = 2720

I've also had great results with Varget & Ramshot TAC in a 20" .308.

Re: Loads for a short barrel .308

Ive used if i remember correctly, 43.5 grains of H4895 all the way up to 44 grains and was getting roughly 2790 out of my 19 inch barrel Rock. I was also shooting the 155 Scenar

My 2 loads for that rifle are

Win Brass
CCI BR2 Primer
H4895 (43.5 grs) and RE15(45.7 grs)
155 Lapua Scenar
OAL 2.835

Re: Loads for a short barrel .308

Whats your twist rate on that Rock barrel Deadly? To the OP: RL15 or Varget works well in the SPS tac. IMR4895 also is great choice. Make sure you check out our loads post at the top of the reloading forum called the "reloading depot".

Re: Loads for a short barrel .308

h4895 42.1gr
fed 210 prime
150 gr hornady sst
roughly 2800 fps (chrony)
wcc nato brass

same load except 165 gr sst got 2630 fps
both are well below the book load grains but getting close to max velocity for them?!

Re: Loads for a short barrel .308

With H4895 or ADI 2206H same powder

Max listed load by Nick Harvey is 45 Grns with a 150 projectile this still isnt a compressed load and I'm there, although still experimenting in my 18.5 inch barreled 308
