Any of you guys have a good load for the Armalite AR10s?? Not intrested in a load for the DPMS or any of the others just the Armalites.

I am just wondering if their barrels are queer to one or two paticular loads or types of ammo. I haven't had much success with the loads I used in my match bolt gun. I have both 168s and 175s with a few 180 Lapuas.

I am waiting on a set of free floating handguards to see if that helps the accuracy any. The only thing I found that shot half decent in it was military 118SB and that may have been a fluke. My bolt gun hates the stuff!! Thanks guys!!!!!

Re: Loads for Armalite AR10??

46gr Varget, 155gr Scenar, New Win Brass, CCI BR2 primer, .003" neck tension, COAL 2.842"

Avg. 2742.5 fps
ES: 45fps
SD: 13.5fps

45gr Varget, 175gr SMK, 2.82" everything else the same as above.

Avg. 2631.3 fps
ES: 38fps
SD: 11.44fps

Lapua 155gr Scenar
New Winchester Cases
CCI BR2 Primer
2.845" COAL

47gr Varget, 155gr Scenar, 2.845" COAL everything else the same as above.

2832.4fps Avg

ES 25
SD 8.4

All loads fired through my ArmaLite AR10A4 w/ Noveske 21" barrel. All loads are sub-MOA IF I do my part. I am using a Tubbs CWS and heavy 6.5oz buffer too, so work up with caution.

Re: Loads for Armalite AR10??

It really doesn't matter if I use either 175s or 168s in the SMKs since I have both on hand.

I tried the standard Varget loads with the 168s and then tried 4895,4064 and some RL15 with both 168s and 175s. I did find one load with the RL15 that was right at an inch but that was only one 5 shot group. I also had a load with Lapua 185s that didn't shoot to bad but when I reshot it it sucked too.

I just haven't found anything that will shoot consistant in this gun. I will repeat the RL15 load and shoot the 118SB again once I get it back togeather with a free floating handguard on it. (There on backorder right now)

Re: Loads for Armalite AR10??

175 SMK, 45gr of Varget, 210M Primer and LC90 brass is my palma load
175 SMK, 43gr of Varget, 210M Primer and LC90 brass is my 600yd load
155 SMK, 43gr of Varget, 210M Primer and LC84 brass is my 200/300 yd load

My upper (EGW/Sabreco) likes the SMKs 0.010" off the lands. Barrel is a 24" 1:12 Kreiger

Re: Loads for Armalite AR10??

If it's a standard 20" non-free floated barrel I would expect 1" to 1.5". Also keep in mind AR in 308 is a little difficult to shoot at first. Free floated handguard, maybe better trigger if you're still using stock, and you should get an 1" or better when shooting from a good bench rest.

42-42.5 of any of those powders and a 175 loaded to 2.8 should work fine.

Re: Loads for Armalite AR10??

Thanks Guys!! I appreciate the info but like I said I do need the feedback for the std Armalite barrels.

BCP,
That is about what I am shooting. Between 1.5 to 2" with most being in the 1.5" range. My trigger sucks and I do notice a lot of my groups are horzontal it has a 7.5lb pull. I have also heard that putting the free floating handguards on helps from .5 to .75 alot of times. If I could get it to shoot MOA with a good hand load I would be happy. I want to be able to keep them in a 9" pie plate at out to 700yds. My bolt guns keep them in around .5 MOA so all I want is a good MOA semi auto. Thanks again guys!!!

Re: Loads for Armalite AR10??

43.3gr Varget, Win brass, BR2 primer, 175smk -load to mag length 2.800". This is a really good load in my Armalite. But I do have an Eagle upper on it and a Two Stage trigger. I plan on loading up alot of this ammo with no change other than trying Moly coated bullets. Good Luck and stick with it. Oh and funny thing Mine isn't free floated Either...I have just put up pics of it in Field Photo.

Re: Loads for Armalite AR10??

168gr A-max over 43.0 gr Varget, with benchrest primers. 2.800" COL.

Repeateable 0.50 MoA.

I have the target right here to prove it.

Ooops....just noticed you didn't want DPMS (w/ Fulton Armory bbl) , which mine is.

Truth is you hafta find a load that works for YOUR rifle. The best load will vary, even btwn Armalite AR10's.

You can get an idea from the internet, but you can only get an answer from the reloading bench / shooting bench.

Good luck.
