N00b to this sight still. Thinking about building a bolt rifle with plans to shoot to 1100-1200 yds but that still has the capabilities to shoot past that. I've been reading that 300 WSM or 338 Lapua would be good rounds to go with. Also, what optic would be the right match for this long range rifle? I just wanted input from shooters who have experience in this category. Thanks for your help!!

Re: Long Range Bolt Build

At that range... a .308 is getting pretty close... and the cost will be TONS less...

The 300 WSM will reach out there...

BUT.. the .338LM... is a true LR capable bullet. Problem is.. be prepared for the cost... the ammo is NOT cheap at all.

Really in the end depends on your budget....

Matt.

Jamie </div></div>I agree... far less expensive round, lighter and faster than the .308. I read that even at 1000 yards, the .260 still has 30% more energy than, and flying 2-300 fps faster than, the standard .308 round. And almost 90% of the energy that a .300 has at that range. After I finish my .308 build, tha's my next rifle.

This is the article about the .260, check it out.

Re: Long Range Bolt Build

I have fired 1Km (spec'd at 1123yd) with a 24" .260, all hits (yeah, I was amazed, too...). It was a hot (probably too hot) 139 Scenar load.

My current .260 does 2850fps (conservatively) with a 142SMK/140A-Max in a 28" barrel. I think 1200yd (at very least) shouldn't be a biggie.

Re: Long Range Bolt Build

+1 ^^^ unless you honestly have plans to reach well beyond 1K. And if you are, you really need to have something else to shoot with that doesn't cost $3+ a round. It takes a lot of rounds downrange to get good enough to shoot that far out (over 1000) consistantly. Can your wallet and shoulder handle firing hundreds of rounds of 338 lapua?

If not get yourself a .260, shoot thousands of rounds for the price of hundreds of the other stuff. And during all those trips to the range, I'm sure you'll get chances to talk, learn about and shoot .338 and 300wsm. And when you get it, you'll be ready to reach out and touch steel at 1500+.

Re: Long Range Bolt Build

Why not a 6.5x47? You can take it out to around 1350-1400 yards (perhaps a tad further). It has less recoil than a 260 as well. Brass WILL be expensive, but should last a lifetime, so to speak.

However, I wouldn't recommend taking game animals at these distances. For paper, it'd be more than enough, and not nearly as punishing on the shoulder as the 300/338.
