Precision Rifle Workshop - Extreme Long Range Rifle
May 3rd-5th, 2010- Guernsey, WY
http://www.precisionrifleworkshop.com/index.html

"Bring that .50 BMG, that 300 Win, the .338, or even that tuned 7mm Mag. and shoot out to 1500 yards. Learn about wind calls, long range ballistics and build the ultimate drop chart".
(Tuition - $650 3 days, includes on base accommodations and food! Round count - minimum 300 but feel free to bring as much as you like, we'll shoot it. Some shooters in the last course dusted off 4 cases of ammo!)

This school is geared towards the long range hunter or target shooter. There aren't going to be any fieldcraft or sniper tactics taught for those wondering. If downing an Elk at 500 yards is your goal, we can help. If getting closer to making the elusive 'mile' shot is your fancy, we can help there too. Challenge yourself and push that rifle to its limits!

Topics to be covered:

- Positional Fundamentals
- Ammo selection
- Rifle/gear Selection
- Ballistics to include calculation of a Density Altitude based
elevation adjustment chart
- Wind reading and calls
- Spotting your own hits
- Shooting 100-1000yds on paper, 300-1500 yds on steel

Re: Long Range Class - Guernsey, WY - May 3rd-5th 2010

.....and the class is in the bag. Special thanks to the personnel at Guernsey ANGB for their hospitality and use of the terrific ranges.

Here's a photo recap:

The first day consists of 1/2 lecture/powerpoints on the topics I like to cover in a course of this nature....mostly external ballistic oriented with some other tidbits. Second half of the day is on the 1000yd known distance range.

Military Style pits, but with shooting positions every 100 yds....not like a high power facility. I set up some steel as well, but the purpose of this exercise was to get real world dope every 100, out to 1k for the students.

The steel used in this course was a mixture of AR500 1/2 and 3/8" plate obtained from LVShooter and OSUArchetech who can be found here on the hide.

All types of shooters, rifles and calibers to include everything from a Barrett 50 all the way down to 7mm Mag sporter profile rifles shooting off portable benches.

The afternoon of the second day we went over to one of the bases long range steel machine gun ranges. Decent sized targets littered throughout the countryside with 3000yd shots possible (good luck). The weather held out but the wind was insane.....gusts to 50...30mph sustained.

FYI, 50cal API rounds mess things up....bad.

The 3rd day was spent entirely on the automated, scored green bad guy pop-up range. For those that have never experienced it, it's cool as hell. You zip a round through one of the green plastic bad guys and they fall down, then a few seconds later rise back up on their own. There are even vehicle rads to shoot at with 50ies.
Quite the target rich enviroment, but here's an overview of the distances possible.

Me spankin greenies with a 223. Consistent hits out to about 500 were easy, but after that my eyes are toast....need magnified optics.

Re: Long Range Class - Guernsey, WY - May 3rd-5th 2010

Thanks again to all the PRW crew for a very productive and positive training experience. I was more than pleased with the quality of instruction, facilities, and the ranges at the Guernsey WANG base. By day three of the training, on the little “Green Zombie” Range, hitting Zombies out to 900 yards became almost boring.
PRW’s concept of including food, lodging, and training, into one package relieves the student of most of the logistical burden associated with training at location far from home. For me, it was a long drive from central Texas and initially I was a little concerned about living in a squad room with strangers. However, it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. The nightly exchange of shooting experiences, telling war stories, and BS sessions with other shooters was almost as much fun as the actual range time.
I would also like to single out Butterpants himself for special thanks. As a result off his coaching and spotting I was able to hit a 1200 yard target several time with a 308.

Can't believe this. This is less than 30 miles from me and i can't get a set of dates to work out for me yet.

Re: Long Range Class - Guernsey, WY - May 3rd-5th

PRW's Extreme Long Range Workshop was fantastic in every way. I encourage anyone that wants to shoot out to the limits of their gun to give this course a try. I shoot a .50 BMG and I was very pleased with the knowledge and instruction I received from George & Neal. Each one took the time to provide pointers that have improved my groups in a big way. Also thank to SJ, one of the student, for spotting for me and giving me great pointers. Hitting targets out to 1680 was down right fun and scoring hits on the "little green pop-up guys" at very long range was challenging but very rewarding when they fell down and popped back up. The trucks (boy they look a lot like Toyotas) had to be hit in the grill to knock them down. The .50 made shot work of them once you got the hang of it. So, if your looking for a fun challenging time with some great people, great hospitality from the military, and a variety of ranges you can't experience anywhere else, sign up for there next workshop.
I'm from Alaska and plan on doing this again.
