Anybody know a good place to shoot long range in SW VA? I live near Christiansburg, but don't mind driving an hour or so. I know BangSteel is in this neck of the woods, but as far as I'm aware, they only offer classes and competitions... one I can't really afford (yet) and the other I'm not really ready for. Thanks!

Come to our practice shoot on October 19th, it's only 25 dollars and we'll be sure you make it thru all the plates, from 200 to 1040 yards, getting your trajectory data along the way. You will normally have about 5 minutes on each stage, give or take (depending on proficiency)... we will spot you, and help with wind calls if necessary.

How many rounds should I bring?

40 to 60 should do it. You will go through 5 to 7 different distances, and you may need half a dozen or so shots at each stage. The practice match is basically to get your trajectory sorted out, and once you get your scope dialed, you just put a couple or three shots on the plate and move on to the next distance down range. We take the whole group (normally 10 to 15 shooters) through each stage, then move to the next... we'll be on the range for about 6 hours, maybe 7. It's a good time to get a new load sorted out, or a new scope or rig, whatever... and of course a good time to meet other shooters from the area. Hope you can make it.

Sounds great! I should warn you I'm pretty new to this but hopefully I can get some good tips. Thanks, and I think I should be able to make it. Out of curiosity, how much are your matches?

It is probably the best $25 you will spend on shooting. Period. There are lots of guys there that have a truck load of knowledge that will be glad to help you in any way possible.

I'm probably going to get my arse handed to me :D. I've never really shot prone, and the first time I did my recoil management was terrible (had a bit over 1" horizontal dispersion).

I've never been to the practice shoots at Bangsteel but did attend a match this past spring. I met a number of really nice and knowledgeable people, it is the best place I've been to around this area. Other than bangsteel, I don't know of anywhere really within a hour or so.

But there's a place in NC (Woody's Farm is what I think it's called IIRC) and they have several matches throughout the year (going to one on Nov. 9) I'm sure it'll be a great learning experience and fun after you get a little experience. It's about 3.5 hours away though and don't know if they just have like range days or anything. I've heard people get together and go shooting up in NOVA. Finally, TVP in Ohio is a fantastic facility. they have open range days and matches scheduled throughout the year. Granted it's alomst 6 hours from Blacksburg, but I know several people that go there from Kentucky, the Carolinas, Michigan, Virginia and PA. So for how far people are willing to drive there shows how good of a place it is.

Dan, I won't be able to make it to the practice shoot, but I should be able to make it to the match next weekend. Hopefully I'll do a lot better than last time I was there.

nuclear, if you want any more info or anything just shoot me a PM. I'm in Blacksburg so we're pretty close.

Went out to shoot with Dan this week and had a fantastic time! It was only about 45 minutes from my house. If anybody in the area is looking for a great place to shoot this is it.

Great to hear! I'm brand new to this and just getting my setup together. Looking to attend a class at BangSteel so I can learn from the start the right fundamentals to practice. I live near Christiansburg as well.

Talked to a guy there who took the one day class and he had nothing but great things to say about his experience.
