Long Range Setup

I’m looking at buying a new gun for mostly long range use 400yds plus and I’d like some info before I buy. My budget is about $2,200 at the most for the rifle itself. I’m looking at an AR-10 or the Christensen Arms MPR.

1. Is it possible to build a 1MOA AR-10 at this price point? Preferably in .308.

2. If not, would 300 PRC or 7 PRC be more suitable for long range (out to about 1000 yds)? (I would want a long action if I went with the MPR).

3. What would the barrel life be for each of these be?

Why an AR if it’s “mostly for long range? Yes it cam be done by the way, but it’s not near as simple as you may think.

Do you reload?

If no then 6.5 Creedmoor

If yes then 6mm whatever, 6.5 C, 260 Remington, 7-08.
While a .308 will shoot a 1000 yards it’s not ideal, and with the speed lost in a gas gun even less so.


Either PRC will hammer at a 1000 yards. Think farther for them. At the cost of barrel life and recoil.

I have a LMT-H 308 with ZCO 420 on it. On a good day with the right conditions I might be 1MOA around 400, realistically 1.5-2 and I'm fine with it. That setup is way above $2200 though.

If you really want to get an AR10 then do it, but prepare to be disappointed if you're only goal is 1MOA at 400 yard... just my opinion.

I feel like the benefit of a semi-automatic would outweigh a minor accuracy deficit between it and a bolt gun.

Buy Tikka TAC A1 24" barrel 6.5CM, you wont be dissapointed with that rifle.
1000-yards no problems, with good ammo, good scope, shooting skill´s you can go mile with that set.

If you want to shoot accurately mid to long range, help me to understand the advantage (s) of a semi-automatic over a bolt gun ( other than not having to work a bolt, if one indeed considers that a disadvantage of a bolt gun.).

Love my AR10. I've bought and sold much nicer and more accurate guns, but I would never sell it. Its fun to shoot and accurate enough for what it's designed for. That being said, nobody is going to recommend a $2k AR10 if your stated goal is to constantly shoot 1MOA or better at distance.

For OP... you want one, so get it and learn to shoot it as well as you can.

Dumb is it may sound, I read a book by a couple SEAL snipers that said they believed the advantages and accuracy of semiautomatic rifles made them a better choice for almost every mission. Admittedly, I’m looking for a tac driver so a bolt gun looks good after what I hear about the accuracy of AR-10s, plus I have an M1A Loaded Precision already so that slot may be filled

Easy button: you need both a bolt and AR 10 in same round.

Semi auto rifles are almost never as accurate as bolt guns. Particularly large frame ARs are harder to get to run well and shoot accurately compared to a bolt gun. Plus bolt guns are easier to maintain and cleaner (no dirty direct impingement gas systems). The advantage of a semi auto in a combat situation is rapidity of follow up shots. But in the precision rifle match, shooting at the ranges and target sizes that we typically shoot, the gas gun guys really don't shoot faster than the bolt gun guys and the gas guns usually don't score as high either.
