Read somewhere that it's not a good idea to store guns long term in those black plastic hard cases w/foam liners, may be chemical damage to stock finish from the foam (True in my case) and/or moisture retention. What is best substitute for that foam liner? xray9

Re: Long term gun storage..........

The problem with the foam is that it is open-cell foam and it can retain moisture. Find some closed-cell foam to replace it or store it in something else.

While in the service I stored a few rifles in my parent's basement in the Midwest for 5 1/2 years. The basement flooded twice and was humid as hell.
I wiped the rifles down with a silicone rag, greased the actions, and left a heavy coat of oil in the bores. I then placed the rifles in silicone socks and taped up the covered rifles in plastic.
5 1/2 years later I picked up my rifles and they looked new. I also had a pellet gun with the rifles but I did not prep it for storage like my other rifles. It was completely orange and I could not open the breach.

This storage method worked for me but I'm sure there are many good ways to protect your investments. Good luck.

Re: Long term gun storage..........

trubble is i never can keep me mitts off em for long but i have tried a plastic bag over well greased and oiled piece inside one of those type cases for a long time with zero noticeable degradation. basically the plastic bag seals out the moisture while the moisture susceptible foam just pads it from any moving around bumps.

Re: Long term gun storage..........

Humidity is always a big problem here in California. NO matter what I do, rust seems to creep in. I use those silicon socks with fricking grease it seems to keep it at bay...

Have about 40 firearms, half are in hard cases, the rest in zipper type........not necessarily long storage, but storage until next time I used that particular firearm.....thanks!
