Long term storage

OK guys, here's what Ive got. I just acquired a matched set of MK IV S70 1911 s in stainless. Un used , unfired , un carried, in the boxes with all the accessories. Im thinking I am going to pack them away for a couple of decades.

I planning to break them down to relive the spring pressure, coat them in something , possibly vac pack them.

Im worried about corrosion in long term less than desirable conditions. (see gun grabbers)

I use to use a product from RIGs called rust inhibitor and liked it but the company was sold and now makes one product called universal grease and it gets less than favorable comments, (it separates over time)
So, how about CorrosionX ?
If I could find cosmoline , Id use it.

When I got my invitation to the Southeast Asian War Games in 1970 I took my wooden stocks and rips off my guns and coated them in automotive crankcase oil and wrapped them in newspaper. When I got home they were all as good as new.

Wow, sorry to hear about problems with the new RIG formulation, we've been using it forever and it works great. I would always lightly rub down the metal with a small piece of sheepskin moistened in RIG. I would also run a bore mop moistened in RIG down the barrel. I still have some of the old formulation left, hopefully that will last me a long time.

We live not too far from the Ocean and always worried about how best to protect our stuff.

I keep our guns in a safe with a golden rod, the guns are all individually kept in Bore Stores as much for rust protection as for protection against bumps and scratches.

I've had success with RIG, EEZOX as well as Hopper Spit. EEZOX is kind of waxy but works well. I'm not too crazy about the consistency and color of the Hopper Spit (spray can), it's kind of a yucky consistency...but it seems to do a good job as well.

I had some barrel work done on one of our shotguns many years ago, it came wrapped in a rust preventing paper like the old S&W guns used to come in, the barrel soaking in TriFlow oil........They shut down our trap range and so never ended up using the barrel. ..it has remained rust free and pristine in appearance for more than 15 years now.

Corrosion X is great stuff.
I live less than 12 miles to salt water so corrosion is an issue.
My boat has a 60hp Yamaha 4 stroke on it and it is 11 years old. The motor was coated under the cowling with corrosion X many years before I bought it.
To this day, the only place corrosion appears is on the anodes and they are supposed to corrode.

I use Corrosion X frequently because of south Louisiana's brutal humitidy. Works very well.

Cosmoline is right if you're talking decades in storage. I have a Yugo SKS with papers the was packed in the early 70s. When I got all the Cosmoline off and out it was in pristine condition. I don't recommend for wood. It soaks in and won't come completely out and changes the overall finish.

That’s what I would use, all surplus guns that Uncle Sam squirrels away is packed in it then wrapped up in plastic. Just make sure when you go to shoot the firearms, they are completely free of it. Cosmoline will harden like a rock and make it difficult to field strip the guns. This happened to a number of MK17’s, trying to get the pistons out was a mofo.

Shrink wrap with dessicant inside package. Place shrink wrapped package in hermetically sealed case with dessicant in it.. You should have an indefinite shelf life on that

The OP said he wanted to store the guns for decades, I don’t think corrosion x will do that, I know cosmoline will.
I like corrosion x, I fish salt water often and it does a good job of holding corrosion off.

Cosmoline is a tradename for the Houghton family of long term corrosion preventives that range from light oils to waxy solids. Each type has a different protection level. The solid preservative on surplus guns is the waxy type and provides long term protection. We would dip parts into a heated tank, remove and let them drip off and harden. PITA to remove from nooks and crannies without a vapor degreaser or heated tank.

Hey research mil. Comm MC 3000 works for fire ready long term storage it's a gun grease I use it and mc 2500 (oil) extensively putting guns together or after cleaning. I'm a big fan dosen't turn to shit after long periods of time. It's not cheap but goes a long way. My .02

Cosmoline is easy to remove using a heat box.
