Alright guys, I've been a long time lurker here in the semi forum but I havnt posted. A guy I work with heard I was in the market for an AR and said he has one for sale. I know next to nothing about the platform as I am a bolt guy, so I am turning to you guys for help. He said its a cmmg upper on a roggio machined roggio (sp?) lower gas piston gun with an RRA barrel. I forget the manufacturer of the trigger, but I looked those up to be reputable. My main concern is the upper/lower setup, any input?

Yep, in my experience it is usually better to go with a factory gun than some frankengun.

If it's a piston conversion, you might be buying somebody's problem. You're throwing me off with the RRA barrel, that's why I'm going conversion. Or is it?

A lower is a lower, pretty much. A good trigger adds value, the stock and pistol grip just personalize it to me. A complete lower is ballpark-ish 250 - 300.
What's he asking for a price? It sounds like a generic bullet hose to me.

I would run from it like the plague. It is still a retro fitted setup even if someone has already done the work. Go with something good like a POF or just get away from the Piston idea. If it was like one of these then yes,

He was looking for 1k for the rig with Yankee hill irons, an EOTech halo and a decent collapsible stock. Oh and 10 30 rd mags too. You guys confirmed my gut feeling though, thanks for the help. Any direction on where to go for a decent upper middle ar15? I'm not picky on caliber, although I'd prefer 5.56. It'd be a range/'yote gun and possibly a shtf standby

You could also get a Colt 6920 or 6720 for about the same price.

Any of these would be absolutely top quality for a good price. If you go much cheaper, quality may suffer . . . more expensive will get you more bells and whistles and potentially more accuracy.
You can probably save a little money if you buy the upper and lower separately, but there is something to be said for buying a complete rifle.

I would pass up any Franken-piston AR 15, As others have said you might be inheriting some one else's problems. I would buy a new Colt 6920 with the Rodgers stock. I have seen them new for $1040. Or a LNIB 6920 which I have seen for sale right at $1K or less.

Put a red dot of your choice on it.
Get a like new Aimpoint M4s, all the rifle you would need for quite a while.
Shop wisely, you could do it for $1500. If you wanted to sell it down the road, you aren't stuck with brand X or some Frankenshit rifle, would sell no problem...
