I have been looking around lately for a range gun for the wife. we have decided on a 9mm for sure. I have given glock a good look and she had the opportunity to shoot a 19 the other day and liked the feel of it.

I put my 92fs in her hands and she hated it. the grip seemed to be to big for her.

we have also taken a look at the M&P and the XD but have no experience with either.

should I just go with a glock or try and find someone with a different option to try out??

any advise or other options to look into would be greatly appreciated. remember this will be used on the range and at some local matches. no need to be easy to conceal.

thanks.

If she likes the Glock then go with it. My wife loves her 19. The m&p is a great pistol but with most ppl putting Apex trigger kits in them to enhance the trigger, that is more $$ to drop into the gun. I just put a FSS kit into a customer's gun and had to "tune the trigger" to alleviate problems with light primer strikes. I personally don't care for the XD. I prefer less moving parts and it really bothers me that on an armorer's level that the XD can be assembled with some parts being put in backward and you not knowing until you go to fire the pistol and nothing happens.

I would always suggest the M&P.

I think it just points better. It feels better during firing.

The only problem is the trigger, but I have heard that the problems have been reduced in the later model M&Ps.

Compensation on a 9mm is pretty much useless in my opinion, even for the ladies. Porting can also cause unburnt powder to come back at you, further reducing the positive range experience.

If she likes the overall setup and feel of Glock, then a 17 or a 34 would be my pick. Go Gen 4 so there is flexibility in the grip sizes as well. The longer sight radius will help in accuracy, and there are aftermarket parts galore for customization.

Respectfully disagree.

I have a couple of the compensated Glocks and can report that it is very effective in reducing recoil. I had considerable doubts the port design would be all that effective, but it is.

Also, there is no issue with unburned powder being blown at you. You'd get powder blasted if you were shooting from the hip cowboy style, and for that reason I think the "C" models are not ideal as a CC defensive weapon where you never know what position you'll be shooting from, but for a range gun (especially for recoil sensitive people), they're wonderful.

The downsides to the C models are:

1. The front sight gets sooty relatively quickly. It doesn't ruin steel sights (even night nights) but I do find I need to wipe off the front sight after firing several magazines. This is with handloaded ammo loaded with Titegroup, mind you - perhaps factory ammo runs a bit cleaner.

2. They're loud. Much louder than the corresponding non-C models.

3. You lose a little velocity. In 9mm, you'll lose 30-40fps. In 45, you lose 40-50.

4. They are not generally legal in most formal match shooting disciplines. Where they are legal, you have to compete against race guns.
