The time is finally here. I have my Surgeon, the barrel is on the way, and now I need a great Smith to make it a reality. Anybody have any suggestions on who to use to barrel the receiver. There will be other work involved, the action is new but I think it needs lapped or something because it feels a little "grainy". The barrel will need chambered and treaded for the receiver and for a break. Pretty much I will leave it up to the Smith to make it perfect. And after that I need it cera coated. This is not a bench gun build (it is a tactical build) but I want the same type of accuracy. If you guys have anyone in mind let me know. Thanks

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

I have been planning this build for near 5 yrs. The last 2 have been nothing but research. Now that it has actually started I have been on here and other sites every night after work and I agree there are names that keep coming up and there are names that come into question. That is the purpose (maybe misplaced) of this thread, opinions on who is the best. This is a performance based industry, I can't think anyone will get offended if this one is recommended and that one is not. Please just drop your opinions, keep them honest and polite and I will take it from there.
Thanks

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

wow that is a open ended question. There is no "best" they are all good at what they do. Some have more niche clients.

APA
GAP
Black ops precision
Tac ops
kampfield custom
beanland
KMW
Surgeon
Nighthawk
Short action customs
Louisiana precision rifles
Young's guns in montana
and the list can go on and on and on

its really who you call and has the shortest wait time or for me. They are all excellent.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

I'll mention the smith's that I have had build me a custom rifle (in order of most rifles built most to fewest):

APA (American Precision Arms - Jered Joplin)
Warner Tool - Alan and Dan Warner
KMW - Terry Cross

on my short list to build me a rifle some time in the future:
Short Action Customs (Mark Gordon)(working on this one currently)
Greg Tannel (GreTan Rifles)
Beanland

Jeffvn

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Thanks a lot Big Joe. That list will help. I know what you mean, I just didn't word it right. I understand they are all good at what they do, I just thought Hide members might have personal opinions they might share.

I had looked at Kampfield Custom. According to Kampfields website he is not accepting that type of work at this time. He is extremely busy.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Jeffvn,
looks like I have chosen some good ones but I am striking out so far. I also talked with Terry Cross, he is going to build my stock but he cannot help me with the build beyond that. He too is very busy.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

That's what I mean some builders are backed up so just go through that list till you find one who is not. APA, GAP, and black ops are who I would start with. Jared, mike, and George and his crew are all awesome

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

I have rifles done by beanland, sac and had great experiences with both of them. I currently have a build with Chad Dixon so I cant comment on my experience with him yet and Bugholes has been great getting parts from.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

I would use the closest qualified smith to your area. I have some major issues with my latest build that would not have occured if the smith wasn't 20 hours away.

Where are you in Pa? Eastern, Central or Western?

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

If I had the time and could arrange it, I'd love to do a build with Gradous like that. I can highly recommend Greg Young @ SPR (bugholes). Great communication throughout the build process. He raised specific concerns, which showed both an attention to detail and to making sure I got what I wanted. Also, the build was done when promised.

This is a great point. Getting some actual face time will make hammering out details and specifics easier, ensuring you get exactly what you want. You'd think it would be easy enough to just email/verbally explain, but things get lost in the wires.

Mark Gordon is in North Eastern(ish) Ohio. Couldn't recommend his work enough!

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Excellent info guys, Thanks a lot. As for what part of PA, eastern. I am located about 1 hr. east of the ohio line on I-80. I got done with work early today so I plan on calling these folks today. Thanks

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

I would call some of the smiths listed above. A few on that list are not taking on any new builds currently. One only builds Agency/LE rifles and another is running at a 10 month turn time on parts supplied builds. I know this because I was in a similar situation and called them myself several months ago. I would recommend using someone local if at all possible. There are many good smiths that you don't hear about on here, but are well known locally.

Which ones are not taking new builds? and which one is running at a 10 month turn around time on parts supplied builds?

Surgeon and Kampfield customs are not taking on new builds. I talked to Stephen and Karl last week. Mark from Short Action Customs is at 10 months when I called him last month.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

The info so far has been spot on guys. Even before I started this thread I had talked to several of the recommended smiths and they were simply just to busy. That is why I started the thread, to see who is accepting work, and the feedback from the hide was great. Thanks!!!

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Jig stick---I do have a couple local and semi local (within 5hrs.) in mind. I just wanted to look at all my options and see if sending it away to a more well known smith was gaining me anything (other than the name). I am not familiar with Dave Bruno Precision Rifles, LLC, but I will be be after today. Thank You for the suggestion.

Be thankful that the smiths are being honest and up front with you. From experience, nothing sucks worse than being quoted a timeline and having it drag out 3-4 times what was quoted.

Yes, Quickly. Shipped parts and had two completed rifles in 3 weeks.

Excellent point. It is very obnoxious to be flagrantly misquoted on timeline.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

I am absolutely thankful for the honesty of the smiths that I have personally talked with. What a great bunch of guys they are too. Very helpful, and best of all they were not trying to impress on me how good they are and being derogatory about other smiths. One smith actually suggested I contact another smith and talk to him as well. That spoke mountains of both confidence and honesty IMO. I also want to thank all the hide members for the help so far.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Timelines are important to me but with the wait time on my stock being 3-4 months, I can live with most of the quoted time frames. Most of the smiths I chatted with gave me time frames of 3-4 months. There were a few that were way out there (8-10). The longest I have personally been quoted was 14 months. Now thats getting a little crazy.

Karl and I shoot together at the same club. When I started to collect my parts, I asked him about building it for me. He said he's not taking on work, and it would be several years before he would...

Lucky for us, he'll still do fluting work! He's the best in the business.

You're very lucky. I lust after one of Karl's builds. Nobody builds a better looking rile IMHO. Some day..... some day....

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Gradous. Getting ready for my next tac build with him in acouple of months. Just waiting on my stock and barrel. Send me a note if you would like some more details on his builds.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

I'm still not sure where in PA you're located, but if you're not too far from Johnstown, check out Jamie Dodson at Wolf Precision. Great guy to deal with and is building me a rifle now. Couldn't have asked for a better fellow to deal with on my first build. He goes by "JamieD" on here.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Not as well know as some of the other builders here on the hide but you might talk to the folks over at Phoenix Custom Rifles. Brad and Keith Johns father and son team. You can see pics on the hide of builds theyve done and when Im ready to have one built they'll be my go to guys. Already had them do work on several guns quick turnaround excellent customer satisfaction. Give em call.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Sorry I have not replied in a while but things have been very hectic. Thanks to all for the suggestions and I did a lot talking with a lot of smiths. Yes, I did find one, Jon Addis of Area 419 Firearms. Maybe not as well known as some I talked to but he sent me some pic's of his work and he guarantees sub 1/2 MOA (with me doing my part). I also liked that he is not very far from me. I think he will do a great job. I know great things come to those who wait, but I am familiar with other types of metal work and I just cannot see how some of these smiths are literally 6+ months out to chamber, thread, coat and barrel a receiver. I just believe the time frames could be better with no sacrifice in quality. I guess I will find out. At some point in time even Gradious, Kampfeld, Gordon, and other big names were newbies and someone had to take the chance with them. Don't let me down Jon!

Jon is a buddy of mine and he will definitely treat you right. He does great work even though he is just getting started in the game.

Re: Looking for a Smith for a tact. build

Great looking pic's, thanks for keeping me in the loop. I have complete faith in you building this. If I would have had any doubts I wouldn't have sent it to you. Just for everyone else out there looking, Jon is one of the best I have talked to when it comes to knowledge and communication. As for his work just take a look above, and I will let the hide know more once I get her home and get some range data. That will be awhile though, my stock is 4-5 months out.

Thanks Again Jon
