looking for an Ak-47 ?

Re: looking for an Ak-47 ?

I have an arsenal slr 107f. Love it. If you want a quality off the shelf rifle that's the way to go. For a little more you could have fuller do a saiga conversion. Also you should check out One Source Tactical's website. TSD is doing some cool stuff.

Re: looking for an Ak-47 ?

Chinese usually hold good value, good shooters and considered the best by some. The Chinese AK's are the true AK47's (thicker receiver and heavier barrel) not AKM's (modernized with thinner and lighter barrel). German AKM (found in demilled kits) are some of the finest engineered. For AK collectors anything Russian with most original parts hold value. Yugos are well built, but not popular. Some do not have chrome line barrel - which may be the reason. If you want a shooter get Arsenal but make sure it's sights aren't canted. Century's (aka CIA) are hit and miss, and quality no so good.

+1 for Arsenal. You get what you pay for when it comes to AK's. Only thing I don't like about the arsenals is that cheap black finish. Its seems like a black lacquer of something. I'd Duracoat or Cerecoat it.

Re: looking for an Ak-47 ?

Since no one described the low end of the price scale I'll put my two cents in. Romanian AKs are very functional units, and lets face it, all AKs hold their value well. That being said the ones to stay away from are the WASR versions, as many had problems from CAI and the public knows this thus they are the most inexpensive of the Aks. I have a SAR1 and its been problem free.

Re: looking for an Ak-47 ?

+1 for Arsenal, also if you aren't completely dead set on a 7.62 AK (or need it to make things dead) I would suggest strongly considering the 5.45 round as ammo is way cheaper, in the ballpark of 11 cents/rnd shipped to your door and much more accurate. Of the 5.45 Arsenals I've seen (a decent number to set a sample size) all are under 3-4 MOA guns, and I can usually drive mine to 100 yards and hold 2 MOA all day, under 4 when offhand (not the best shot by any means).

Re: looking for an Ak-47 ?

I currently have 4 Ak’s and have owned others in the past. I like Poly Techs and Norincos. Arsenal generally does a good job as well. If you’re looking for a good shooter that won’t break the bank, I recently picked up a Bulgarian SSR 85C on a 1.6mm receiver from Centerfire for $399. I’ve been impressed with it. It sure beats the shit out of WASR’s and the other crap in that price range. Here it is after a little TLC…

Re: looking for an Ak-47 ?

You probably hear this all the time, but be very wary of Century Arms. Sometimes there stuff is not marked very well on certain websites. I had a decent AK74 by century, but the rule of thumb applies in this case... You get what you pay for. That being said: ARSENAL!

This hardly seems necessary.

Re: looking for an Ak-47 ?

Ive owned Arsenal's, Century Yugo's, a Chi-Com MAK-90, and have gotten rid of all of them for Rifle Dynamics and Arizona Response Systems built guns. They each offer something different. In terms of a fighting gun, Im not convinced you can get anything better than a Jim Fuller built AK. If you want more of a 'classic' type look with a professional touch, Mark Graham at ARS does great work. In terms of holding value, due to the wait time to get a gun from either of them, they hold their value better than most. I recently sold a Jim Fuller build for exactly what I paid for it, even after I ran several hundred rounds through it.
