Gunsmithing Looking for $$ info on machining a bbl blank

Hey guys, sorry if this isn't the proper place to ask this! If so please feel free to move the topic or direct me where I should ask.

I am looking to find out what I should expect for pricing on a smith machining a barrel blank for me.

the blank is in the white, no real machining to it yet. I am looking to have it:

Cut down to 18" (currently at 20 3/4" length)
Target crowned
Muzzle threaded 1/2x28 tpi
Breech sized and threaded for standard shank savage
Chambered and have the throat extended a bit
Then tapered or machined to a finished state

What should I be looking at for this kind of work??

you will need to send your action in with the barrel. And im sure everyone will recommend getting it trued.

I would expect to pay somwhere in the $350-$375 range.

Understandable! Not saying it isn't worth it, just saying it was more then I was hoping to spend on a project I want to do..

shillen select match from jim at northland is less and its a prefit. $275-$290 i think

the cheapest way to go would be to get a prechamberd barrel from brownell s and sell off your blank to recoup some funds whos blank is it ?

350-400 is a good call. Also Larry Racine who shoots a Savage and is a well respected smith who was on at least 2 Palma teams in the 90's would disagree about the action. If you want more info wander over to bench rest central.

Axeman, boing, boing, boing, boing, wha?? Oh right!

The problem is I am not looking for a standard chambering offered in an off the shelf blank. I am wanting this one done in 7.62x25 Tokarev. I've found one place so far that offers them as a drop in and his price is pretty much right in line with the 350-400 figure, but that is with a mcgowen stainless barrel which I am sure is WAY better then this thing is! I don't know who made this blank. It's a cheapy from Numrich, and when I say cheapy, I mean less then $50 cheap!

I just want to play around with the caliber and setup, and I'm sure you can tell by the cost of the bbl I am not wanting to sink that kind of money into a barrel that will more then likely be sub-par at best. I have been talking with a gentleman over the net who has done what I want to do, and he in fact used these exact blanks with great results. I just don't want to spend $400 on something that might turn out crappy anyway!

oneswithfunes, this may be true as far as bench rest quality is concerned but guys at the savage shooters site switch barrels themselves regularly with outstanding results. Plus with the caliber I am talking about I won't be looking for that kind of perfection. I just want to play around with this one!

I understand where you are coming from and there is no one correct decision. However most smiths feel so strongly about truing the action they are hesitant to chamber and install a match tube with out doing it. I think what you are trying to do is going to cost some money one way or the other.

I agree with you there! lol (seems to always be the way with me for some reason!!)

That being said, I have been in contact with a local gentleman who will be taking care of my needs on this one!!

I'll post up how it turns out!
