I'm more of a convental guy. You can get a lot of dried rice and beans for $99 and supplement them with small game.

Never cared for that freeze dried stuff.

Agreed.

Also watch the sodium levels in that stuff too. The mountain house freeze dried food is loaded in salt.

Boiled rice and any game you kill along the way can be easily regulated in the sodium department by flavoring with other spices and minimal salt.

It's hard to understand the angle your thinking from.
yeah sure, I'm a conventional type guy myself. This is more for the "what if" scenario's and for people that just don't have small game running around to hunt at will.

So having said that. It's a hard to make arguement to make saying that most people would not benefit from having things like these at their disposal.

So for everyone else that perhaps isn't a modern day davy crockett these may be a good option for you.

P.S. The last thing I'm thinking about is the sodium levels if I have to resort to eating these things daily.

My wife is an animal rights nut so I have plenty of Wise Company and other types of foods to last for several months if we ever have the big quake out here in SoCal. Watch the MRE’s they sell at some stores as they only have a five year shelf life compared to the 20+ years of military MRE’s.

While I agree with the sodium comment, I laugh because I'd rather have any food than no food at all.

At times people seem to just like to bitch on forums. The OP was only merely pointing out where one can purchase MRE's locally.

I love that point of view. Animal rights to the point of being a vegetarian.

You know what vegetarians are?

Spoiled people that have so much they can actually choose not to eat meat.

That would all change when choice is taken out of the equation.

im not a big walmart fan but since they started carrying augason farms stuff i recommend giving them a look online. i got 60 lbs of stuff shipped free and arrived in 3 days. their entrees are pretty good.

unless u have high BP, high salt is perfectly fine...

In a situation where I have to start eating MRE's and such daily I can say
with confidence that there are bigger problems for me to worry about than
salt content.

That thinking is so backwards and inconsequential at that point I'm not sure how it even comes up in the conversation.

I was a company commander of a Native (Eskimo) Alaska Guard Infantry company. During AT we were given a lot of MREs that had a pen hole in the packages.

I lost the use of about one third of my company to food poisoning.

They changed the name of MREs to "Meals Rejected by Eskimos".

It wasn't just my company, the other companies in the BN were effected also.

I realize this is an isolated incident, problem is, you never know until its too late.

For those that still have access to a Commissary, most carry both the MRE's and training MRE's (less calories). If they do not, the Commissary can order them (both AAFES and NEX have this policy now). Last time I bought them (about 6 months ago) it was around $90 for a case of MRE's and about $60 for a case of training meals...makes for good earthquake/wildfire/armegeddon/whatever insurance...

ouch.. 90$ new... 60 at the gun show, and back in the day they were 30 a case

and i still have a few cases of those

Yeah, but "back in the day" they really tasted like sh!t (the pork patty reminded me of a crispy dog treat). The ones out today aren't too bad (assuming you're not eating them for four months straight), so I'd account that for some of the cost increase. More variety and additional extras in them these days to break the boredom...

MRE's freshness and shelf life are greatly affected by storage. There is a chart on-line, that shows how quick that stuff can be ruined by storage under high heat or hot/cold fluctuations.
The best is cool storage that stays that way.
the same is true of Freeze dried, except when in a can with nitrogen it can be up to 20 years. MOuntain House has a chart for their products too. the Mylar bagged products do NOT last as long no matter what, but refer tot he chart. Whether you like their stuff or not, their chart is accurate.
Finally, freeze dried foods that are repackaged by the consumer have a 30 day MAX shelf life. You cannot buy it in bulk and repackage it for long term.
I have bought from Mountain House (Oregon Freeze Dried Foods) since I returned from the war in 1968. I prefer the weight when I was still backpacking, and I prefer the ease of storage for home preparedness. I have a rotation system, and we keep track carefully. And yes, we keep dry pack beans, and grow our own food.

I'm no vegetarian. Animals are made of delicious meat for a reason.

But there's no question that a vegetarian diet is less expensive and more easily sustainable than one that includes meat. As a % of calories, how much meat is eaten in the United States, compared to India and China? Now, which country has more spoiled people who have too much?

But seriously when you see them for sale is there a way to know what you are buying? I would hate to buy ones that are about to expire, kind of defeats the purpose.

Yep. Military MRE's have an inspection date a few years after they are made printed on the box.

The inspection date is not an expiration date.
