I've been trying to do research on different 1911 manufacturers and looking at what they have available. I'm having somewhat of a hard time finding one with a rail around $800. Once I get into the $1100-1200 range I don't seem to have a problem finding one's that look quite nice. I would really like to get a Springfield since I've had really good luck with them before. I haven't read anything convincing to buy a Taurus. Something that can be upgraded after I shoot it a good bit would be nice, so I'm trying to stay away from the base models ($500 range). Let me know your thoughts suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

Check out Doublestar's 1911 platform or even Sig's 1911 series. The Sigs are extremely accurate and can be found in the 700.00-1,000.00 range. Ihave a S ig Blackwater 1911 for daily carry that is a tackdriver . One of the sweetest factory 1911's I've found and I own at least a dozen 1911's.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

I wouldn't buy the Taurus. Basic frame is ok, frame and slide are one of the few left that are forged, but internals are iffy and customer service is a dog. Mine is a great shooter now, but it went back to Taurus twice and I eventually gutted it and put all Wilson parts in it.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

You should be able to look around and find a used TRP or Warrior in your price range. I have a Kimber Warrior and it is great, and as accurate or more than my SA Target.
I have never heard anyone say they regret getting an SA TRP, and I haven't heard anyone complain about the Warrior.

There are other 1911s out there but those 2 seem to be a close match to what you want and to your budget.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

Thanks for the STI Lawman recommendations. They look like nice guns, however I can't seem to find one that has a rail on it. It's also a little more money than I would want to spend right now, so I'd have to find a used one.

The Doublestar looks really nice and just on the high end of my budget, same goes for the Sig Tactical and the Blackwater.

The Kimber Warrior or the Desert Warrior is what I was looking at until I was hearing some reliability issues with Kimber and their horrible customer service.

I'm going keep an eye out for good used 1911's right now or until I decide on which new one to buy.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

I would just wait and try to find a nice used one in your price range..My uncle bought one of the Taurus 1911s and absolutely hated it,I think that abi safety latch broke on it the first day and had a couple other quirks, anyways 2 trips to Taurus and it was bye bye,But a close friend of mine has a Taurus 1911 and he loves it no problems(yet)actually got rid of his G21 to get it..

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

I have a SIG Blackwater 1911. Great accurate gun.It is very accurate from the factory.Their custom shop makes it.

You would not go wrong with a Springfield Operator of any of the Kimbers all of which I have shot and are of the same class as the Sig

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

I have a Colt railgun, it shoots great, I have a TLR mounted to it, and it stays on the night stand. I have always wanted a Warrior though. Just remember, most of the time in the long run, you get what you pay for. Shop around a bit, you may be able to find a used one. Good luck.

Most of the Kimber reliability issues you hear about can't happen to the Warrior series.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

Look at a Smith and Wesson 1911 tactical. They look just like a Kimber Warrior and only 800-900 bucks. Stay away from the melonite finish, it wears way too easy. The trigger and accuracy on those Smiths are sweet, and Smiths cusomter service is much better than that of Kimber. STAY AWAY FROM THE TAURUS the rail is way to fat in thickness and width.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

Well I won't be getting a taurus, I'm going to keep checking out the guns for sale on here and at my local gun shop in hopes of finding a nice used gun.

What are some things that I may need to look out for buying a used 1911?

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

One thing I allways look at is the fit of the slide to the frame, hammer back safety off and obviously with the 1911 having been cleared so no ammo. See how much play is in the slide from side to side, Some say that is not important but it is to me. Also check the barrel for any odd looking wear patterns.

Re: Looking for my first 1911 with a rail

Good choice on staying away from the Taurus. Had a friend bought one safety went down first range session. Taurus covered it under their lifetime warranty but it took 3 1/2 months to get it back. Its not a $2300 custom pistol for $600 bucks like their ads say.

Might want to look at adding a Dawson rail to a 1911 if your local gunsmith can do it you can probably have it done for around $150 bucks the rail is $70 bucks. And you can still use a lot of your holsters with the light off. Their are a lot of used guns such has the Springfield loaded series that run in the 6-7 range that should put you in your budget range.

They don't look "just like" one another. There are differences in the two that matter to some, but not all, consumers.

I was just trying to give a side by side physical apperance for comparison. Sorry if I did not type it out in that way.
