Re: Looking for new starting load specs for 10FP 3
For practical accuracy applications, employing reasonably moderate handloading effort and expense, I suggest our standard loads. I favor Winchester brass, Sierra MatchKing bullets, Hodgdon powders, and CCI primers.
Winchester brass, F/L resized and flash hole reamed.
CCI BR-2 primers, if they show a demonstrated accuracy improvement over CCI-200's.
Bullets should be seated an average of .010-020" out of the lands, until testing shows a better, more accurate seating depth. If magazine feeding and best accuracy demonstrate different optimal seating depth, you have a decision to make.
Basic, standby favorite loads:
Sierra 150 and 155gr Matchkings, 46.0gr of Varget.
These bullets are OK for 600yd and closer.
Sierra 168gr MatchKings, 45.5gr of Varget.
These bullets are generally quite good to 800yd, but are in less favor than:
Sierra 175gr MatchKings, 45.0gr of Varget.
Under practically all conditions, this is a reliable 1000yd load.
My IMR-4064 load for this bullet is 42.2gr. I use it for a reliable 1Kyd load out of an M1A/M14, but many here report good performance from bolt guns too.
For semi's, please take care to ensure primers sit flush, and don't protrude. Never, never, never, ever, ever, ever hand chamber a round in an M1A/M14 with an empty mag and let the bolt slam home. Put it into the mag, and let the bolt strip it out and feed/chamber it according to the designed feeding process. Please.
I speak of the M1A because for many folks here, a .308 semi is a logical progression as a companion gun to a .308 bolt rifle. Essentialy, what works for the M1A/M14 also works for the AR10, etc.
