Looking for other Remington 700 owners

Hello everyone, I am new to the snipers hide forums. I recently bought a band new Remington 700 5R milspec gen 1. Mounted a scope on it. Zeroed it in and shot this three round group at 100 yards after some dry fire practice and about 20 rounds. I was shooting 165 federal gold medal match in 308. This is my first time with a bolt action. Is this decent for a Remington 700 5R? I heard quality and accuracy and be spotty...

Remington 700 5R gen 1 .308 rifles shoot like that. All that I have first hand experience with shoot at least 3/4” and most shoot better.

I actually wasn't knocking the gun at all. My guns are trued Remingtons...and all are wearing Krylon.

What I was commenting on was the lack of statistical significance in a 3 round group. I could post half of the 5 round groups my rifle shoots at 100 yds and call it a 1/2 moa "all day long" rifle.

The truth is though, when I fire 4 groups of 5 rounds at the same point of aim at 200 yds, it will stack all 20 into 1.4 moa. THAT is the actual accuracy potential of the rifle, shooter and load.

My experience with the 700 in 308 is my personal LTR (factory and since trued), and two other 700P’s. All have shot well w factory match ammo, ie 3/8 to 3/4 without too much difficulty.

Thanks for the info (and the humor) guys!! I’ll be sure to work on checking the repeatability of the rifle next time I am out to confirm accuracy. As the day went on I noticed my groups got tighter and tighter with practice and concentration so I figured it was me and no the rifle. Once I got that right if a group I was happy and ended up heading home because my wife was alone at home with our sick 6 month old. Figured it was time to go ?

This is the man’s first time out with a bolt gun and this three round group gave him joy whether significant or not. Does it matter if that is the only group he shot that looked like that? He isn’t on hear bragging about his 1/4 moa rifle like so many in here do. He is posting because he is happy and proud. Let him have that.

Looks like a good start with what I presume is the stock Rem trigger, based on you trigger thread. Swapping the Rem trigger and putting some time behind the new one will help with consistency.

I have this rifle and it shoots very well. I put a new scope on it and after a 3 shot to get pretty much on target it shot a pretty nice 5 shot group. I was using 175 gold metal match.

My Gen2 5R 300WM is ok... after bedding, Timney 2 stage, and replacing the extractor with an M16 style. Should've been better out of the box IMHO.

208 ELDM, 75g H1000, starting at 30 thou off the lands got me 0.66" @ 100. Still working on it.

I have found that it only gets more expensive the more you get into this shooting lifestyle. Haha. At least it has for me and I am constantly looking at stuff that is just more expensive. I should have just spent $5000 on a setup to start with and then I wouldn't have to upgrade ever again.

I have an, ancient by current standards, Rem 700 .308 with many thousands of rounds on the original barrel that is still sub-moa with custom ammo. Honestly Remingtons are better than you expect. Even my Howa is a tack driver. I am not sure anyone really makes bad rifles anymore thanks to modern manufacturing. So no, don’t be surprised with that accuracy.

Quoted for truth. There are a ton of 1/4 moa all day long rifle out there based on the best three round groups the rifle/shooter ever made. If you shout 5 groups of 5 and the average of all the groups is .75 moa - you got a GREAT rifle & shooter.

All my custom Rifles are on a Remington 700 action, any more I just order the Remington action and go from there, I’ve had 6 Remington rifles and about half of them shot great, The other half wasn’t good, the Remington actions are awesome to work with for custom builds though, no sense in buying these custom actions for 900-1200 dollars when you can have a trued Remington 700 do the same thing for half the price, so even when you do get a Remington that doesn’t shoot just re barrel it and move on.

The first picture is 10 shots, the second picture is the first five of that day. The one the group below the penny and flier closest to the penny are the only ones shot from that rifle. I was confirming my old load with a new lot of 53 V-Max. Factory XCR long range 223, I used to have a gravel pit that I shot at that blocked most of the wind. It would shoot 1/2 MOA at 300y with 26.6 of target and a 55 V-Max.....there.....LOL Many several thousands of rounds down this one. I expect it to give up the ghost any time now. I thought it had...then I cleaned it and it came back. ?

The second picture I laid the target down to get my finger off the penny, and turned it upside down on accident. Its POI is the same as the next 10.

My 5R Rem700 SPS in 300 BO shoots good for what it is. Has Timney trigger, magpul stock and cheapo Nikon M223 scope in some Badger rings. Shoots 220 grain subs really well and is plenty quiet with the YHM Phantom on it.

I am a believer in this however seeing how far out Remington actions are when gunsmiths go to blue print them is concerning. It bares the question though. If I'm getting kind of accuracy out of a stock rifle from remington on a stock trigger and I go to get the actions squared up but the Smith tells me the action was way out... just how important is blue printing?? I do believe there are lemons out there but I think it is over exaggerated online.

I do agree Remington 700 actions are get foundations to build off of, as I have a few I built. BUT a Remington 700 action blueprinted and trued is still only bringing into the lower level of custom 700 clone actions. Being an owner of both, custom actions are on another level. You would spend more on the action and work to make a 700 factory action better than some of the custom actions available, than the cost of the custom actions.

They both will do the same thing, click and bang. But accuracy wise... A wise riflesmith once said, accuracy is a lot of little things all added up. There’s a reason custom actions dominate the BR world.

I do agree accuracy is a lot of little things added up but can you really get better than a one hole group so many of us take even un trued 700s and shoot just as good as the top tier actions I have both trued and untrued actions and other than smoothness of the bolt and what not they all shoot equally great, I have no doubt that the top tier actions are 100 times more smooth but it would be minimal for accuracy in my opinion, maybe your experience has been different.

I have three, my newest is a 6.5 Creedmoore and accuracy is very good, but. Something is not square, I can swap the same scope and mounts I've used on two other Rem 700s and it will shoot a full 10 Mills to the right. No issues with swapping between the other two rifles. I'm betting it's the barrel to receiver as I've removed and torqued the pic rail and made no difference. Someday I'll send it off and have barrel set back and action blueprinted but for now I just push 10 Mills left and rezero.

New guys typically start with a rem action then quickly upgrade. You can get a rem action to shoot great but by the time they are at the same level as a custom action your at or above the cost of a custom. Unless you dovthe work yourself.

How many world records have you set or anyone else on here?


Weeze just killin' deer, hogs, punching paper, ringing steel and such..... 700s work for us.

You get one of them their fancy actions and can't read the wind, you would be wishn' you had a 700....

Splitting hairs. If I can get a five shot dime size group from a factory remington I'm happy. 90% of the people on here aren't trying to set "world records".

i watched what a 1000 yard competition was like on one of the outdoor channels that had a segment on it. These guys unload 10 rds or so as fast as they can rack the bolt and pull the trigger. Semi auto fast damn near. The object is to shoot as fast as you can before the wind changes. They get 10 minutes for 10 shots and use all of 8 seconds of them. They arent shooting these world record rifles. They are locked down tight and recoil straight back with no chance of moving from the initial setup. A five year old could do it. This discipline is not about the shooter. It is about the rifle and ammo setup. Gun shoots itself.

I never claimed to sent any records. There’s are record holders on this forums for BR and ELR

Please elaborate how a 700 worked by Chad Dixon on his 5 axis 500k super duper machine is not as straight , true, timed, tigged as a custom that needs the same TLC ???

Do you think just beacuse you buy a custom action they are not "massaged" be a reputable smith?

Keep in mind I like LRI and have action work done by them on one of my 700s. They do excellent work. I run Tooley Custom Rifle action, he may massage them but not much.

LRI is maximizing efficiency with the latest 5 axis machine. They do an excellent job of that. But still they are offering upgrading factory actions. My Tooley Action comes with all of the upgrades I would have LRI do to my 700 action, plus some. Also my Tooley Custom action cost me less than the work plus the action, for my 300 WM 700 LA.

Please enlighten me on the % of accuracy that one will achieve from and LRI 5 axis vs a top name custom?

Really no debate. Add up the cost to have LRI make a standard 700 action run like a custom action.

If you go with a new Remington 700 action, you better check it before buying for slop. I have felt some nasty new Remington 700 actions over the last couple of years. I have two new 700 rifles purchased over the last year. One a standard 700 LA mag bolt face. It had to get shipped to LRI to fix it as it didn’t have primary extraction and wouldn't cycle correctly from the factory. I sent it two LRI when it wasn’t less than 3 months old. Shoots great now tho.

The second is a 5R 308 ss short action. Run great and shoots great.

I would still go buy a new Remington but I would thoroughly inspect it before signing for it due to the issues I’ve experienced with them recently.

Btw been a 700 man since I was a boy.

Funds are not an issue.

Specs and performane. Period.
