I just purchased a TRG-22 in .260 with 26" barrel. I am now stuck with trying to find a scope for it. My previous rifle had a Leupold Mark 4 on it and i wanna step it up from there.

My options are Nightforce or US Optics. I realize theres a $1000 difference from those thats not the issue concerning this thread. Im assuming both companies can custom make a rifle with whatever reticle you could ever want in whatever zoom.

If i choose NF itll be 8-32. If i choose US Optics ill choose 5-25. However, I cannot decide on a reticle and or the click adjustments.

.1 mil or .25 MOA. How many inches are in a mil? is .1mil close to .25moa? If im shooting out to 1000yards with this rifle will the scopes turrets be able to turn that far with such small incriments?

The rifle will be used for hunting (100-400 yards) and LR shooting (600-1000yards)

HELP!

Thanks

Re: Looking for scope for TRG-22

Decide on what reticle you want to use then make sure the turrets adjust in the same increment. Example: NF MLR reticle is a MIL based reticle so you would get turrets that adjust in .1 mil.

Read this at least 5x over:
Mils and MOA

Remember also that a scope with its reticle in the Second focal plane will have the reticle accurate (for ranging and milling) at only a given power (usually max power).

A scope with its reticle in the First focal plane will have its reticle accurate at ANY power. If you can mil the target at 10x then no need to power up. Same if it were on 11x and same if it were on 20.298793x. A mil is a mil in a FFP scope regardless of what the power ring says.

Yes i knew to look for a First Focal Plane scope. One of the few things i picked up in my Army long range shooting class.

Ill read over that article and if i have questions i guess ill ask.. Thanks for the post. Woulda looked forever.

Well if you knew to look for a FF plane NF 8-32 or for that matter 5-22 are not going to be an option, they are second focal plane unless something has changed recently.

Re: Looking for scope for TRG-22

Me thinks you should wait for much more input before purchase. You ask for reticle recommendations but state you won't be using them very much to range. Congratulations on your 260 Sako a very good choice.
There is a large thread on them you may want to check out.

Re: Looking for scope for TRG-22

Due to the stated purpose of the rifle is not a Bench rest gun wouldn't worry about loosing the finer adjustment of the quarter MOA over the Mil turrets also see no need for 32 power ever for hunting at the ranges stated. So now I'm looking at glass clarity and light transmission at low levels. Just my .02.

Re: Looking for scope for TRG-22

I plan on shooting Competition with this rifle out to 1000 yards. which is why the higher magnification would be nice.

The 5-25 would def be just about perfect. Light transmission and clarity will be great with either of the two scopes

Re: Looking for scope for TRG-22

You have made one of the best choices there is in a rifle and cartridge combo, congrats!

One of the best things about the TRG is that it is lightweight for a tactical rifle. In keeping with that theme have you considered the weight and size of the scopes you are considering? The NF 8-32 is a SFP of average weight, the USO 5-25 FFP is a pretty large and heavy scope. Personally although I like using high mag sometimes I hardly do because I typically need to take advantage of a larger field of view that 13-18x gives and to have reduced magnification of mirage.

Take a look at the March 3-24 or the new FX 5-40.

Some of the better bang for the buck FFP scopes($1600 retail) are the Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21 which I run and the SWFA 5-20.

Re: Looking for scope for TRG-22

Weight doenst matter too much for me. Ill stay away from such high magnification. Like i said the 5-25 would def be high enough for me.

I tend to stay away from Bushnell. Had a few bad experiences in the past.

Re: Looking for scope for TRG-22

Congratulations on the rifle purchase, excellent choice! I have a 260 TRG and it is the sweetest shooting rifle I have ever shot. You are in for a treat.

Have you shot much at long range? The reason I ask is your magnification choices are on the high side for your caliber, especially for a combo hunting rig. If you are shooting only to 1000 yards at steel targets (mine are 15 inches or 1.5 moa at that range) a 3-12 power scope is plenty. I have a 4-16 Zeiss Hensoldt on my 260 TRG and frequently shoot at 12 power out to 1200 yards. The larger field of view and less mag helps read the conditions and minimize the distortion from mirage. I have shot a group of less than 2 inches with my 260/4-16 scope at 670 yards. This rifle/scope combo averages about 0.4 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards. I am not sure I would ring out any more accuracy with a 25+ power scope. I do know that high power scopes are a lot less forgiving as far as the eye placement and ease of sight picture.

I also prefer FFP scopes. They are not only useful for range estimation. They greatly facilitate communication between spotter and shooter if both are using FFP shooting and spotting scopes with matching reticles (moa or mil). The 260 has minimal recoil, often you can spot your own misses (maybe not at 30 power!) but sometimes it is impossible. The spotter can visualize the trace, "impact 1.5 mils right and 0.5 mils low", shooter can immediately hold and fire the correction no matter the mag power with a FFP scope.

You should try to meet some people and look through a variety of scopes if possible. You obviously did your homework on the rifle. You need to do a little more reading and looking at scopes in my opinion before throwing down your money on an optic.

PS - In my gun, 142 SMK, CCI BR2, Lapua brass, and 43.0 gr H4350 is a winning combo. Start low and workup in your gun.
