I am about a year out from registering for the police academy. Our qual standards aren't all that high, but I was wondering what I can do to get in shape. Working out is not a new concept to me, but dieting is. I am working on a food journal so I have some numbers to add to this post. I am 6'1" 243 lbs, which puts me around a 32-33 bmi If I did it right. I have noticed that there are some good pointers on here from some experienced people, any direction would be great. Thanks

i think the best thing for you is to see where other people had success...a lot of people have their own theories and all...but it always helps to see it from a persons point of view that has been there and actually accomplished their goals

so here..

http://www.bodybuilding.com/guides/

there are tons of articles on people and the diets they used on their...dont stay closed minded about working out either..remember, you have a year...dont rush it..but dont prance around like a fairy either

BMI doesnt mean dick , mine is at 38 yet i have a decient set of abs , dont base anything on that but rather your athletic performance.
what does your eating and workout schedual look like??

Re: Looking for some direction-- please help!

I suggest jogging in addition to weight training with a trainer who is skilled in dieting

We can help you better too if we know your age. Knowing your age is helpful because your age has a lot to do with your metabolism. A picture too is worth a thousand words
That's why they bitch on the 'for sale' forum when sellers don't post pictures of the item for sale.

One cannot know how to weight train without a professional trainer. Throwing dumbbells around is not weight training. Indeed, slinging heavy weights can actually cause irreparable injury that will keep you out of a job you would have been otherwise fit for. You're not new to weight training but you might be new to weight training the right way to get a better result along with efficient dieting.

This is what I've learned so I'm passing it along so you won't have to waste time learning it too.

I agree about the BMI as I am 5"11 and I should weight about 165-170. Iv'e been there and felt too skinny. Now if the force has a BMI standard similar to the Navy, you want to concentrate on reducing your waist and increasing your neck size.

All that aside, you are on track by logging all of you daily intake. Drink plenty of water, increase fiber in your diet to have healthy digestion.

Now remember that fat burning exercises are a bit diferent than your standard cardio. You only want to get your heart rate to about 65% of your max, just take 180 and subtract your age, this will give you a target. I recommend you do you fat burning at least three times a week, 1 hour or 15 min on 4 machines. It is frickin boring but you can get through it. Then find a good workout to tone up your muscles. Each couple of pounds of lean muscle mass you increase burns more calories each day as your metabolism increases.

If you happen by Bodybuilding.com they have a great workout scheme with nutrition and workouts based on age and goal.

Good luck

Re: Looking for some direction-- please help!

Good advice from the people who have replied to you already.
My suggestion is to avoid calling what you are doing "A Diet".
Instead look at what you are doing as lifestyle choice for a healthier fitter body.
Basically stop eating processed foods and eat a balanced diet of fruit, veg, fish if possible, lean chicken and red meat, venison if you hunt?
My son is a chef and is at present making out an eating plan for a family in New York. If you are interested I will ask him for a copy of the plan and forward to you.
The balance you should be looking at is as follows:
"Eat less, exercise more"
Let me know if you want to see the food plan?

"Nicked this from another thread in here!!
It has some good advice as well, have a read."

I have a good buddy who is a lifting fanatic, real big power lifer type guy. He was always huge and freakishly strong, but always had a gut. A couple years ago he wanted to try the body for life program and talked two of us into it. I was not too into it at first, but it was great.

It is basically a 12 week cardio/weight routine, with nutrition program. Man I am here to tell you, if you FOLLOW that program for 12 weeks you will be amazed.
The nutrition plan is great, no starving, you are always eating, small meals with snacks in between. It really will change the way you eat. No bird food, just a bunch of good recipes. My wife still loves the "eating for life" cook book as well. You still eat all the real foods beef, fish, chicken, rice, pasta, potatoes, vegetables. No rice cakes and tofu starvation crap.

Work outs were intense but fast. I modified my cardio routine a little. Three of us did it together, so a couple shit talking buddies will definitely help keep the fire going. basically you follow the routine six days a week, then a day off , eat what you want, relax for a day.

That whipped my ass in shape quick. There are a ton of great programs around now a days, but persistence is the key. If you are interested in more info, shoot me a PM. I just gathered all the charts and info up again for a few guys I work with.
50lbs in two months, you would need to come to Alaska and chase goats with me.....for a month at least.

Re: Looking for some direction-- please help!

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of activity on my part, it has been a crazy few days here. To add some more info, I am 17, and I have been lifting with a trainer. Any food ideas or recipies(sp?) that yall have would be greatly appreciated. I have started the fat burning excercises with a half hour on my bike with a target rate of 160-165 and a jog for the remaining half hour. Is it possible to drink too much water? I had almost gallon and a half yesterday and 5 quarts today. My meals havnt been excessive or unhealthy I dont think, breakfast is almost always an egg sandwich, some type of fruit and orange juice, lunch is either venison or chicken breast with potatoes, dinner is usually another sandwich or something light.. I dont snack througout the day which is something ive found to be controversial. Should i throw almonds or fruit in every few hours?

Re: Looking for some direction-- please help!

Have a look at the web site I am giving you it will give you lots of good advice. www.forksoverknives.com

As much fruit and veg as you want, raisins and bananas are good as well, one orange a day is enough, more and you will just piss out the rest. The body has enough in one.
A gallon of water is a bit too much I would think, under half a gallon would be ok.
What you are doing sounds great, don't be in any rush to see the fat turn into muscle, all in good time. Best of luck with your plans for the future. Keep posting your progress.

I can't tell from your profile where you live, whether you're Asian for example because if you were advice to you would be far different than an African-American with with your stats, or whether you reside in the Arctic. We assume you're mainland American, but assuming isn't wise.

You're probably, at your age, used to inhaling any food you've seen. Nothing really wrong with that. But now, stop doing that. Go lean and otherwise do as your certified trainer instructs; continue doing what you're doing until qualifying and you'll be a stud by then. Time will do its part.

Re: Looking for some direction-- please help!

The academy that I attended was 16 weeks and was very focused on running and stamina. It is a good idea to also build strength just because of the job your entering... it's good to be able to chase down bad guys, but you will need the strength once you catch them.
Good luck with everything.

Just graduated from the DOCJT Center in KY and thought pt was pretty pathetic. I have a pretty intense background in pt though. There were some guys who struggled but everyone made it. Don't let it scare you you will do fine.
