I just got done building my first precision rifle, a Remington 700 PSS in 300 Win Mag. I bought my stock and DBM as take-off's from a Remington 700 MLR my cousin bought. Vortex Viper 6.5-20x42.

Awesome rifle, and it's a blast to shoot. Best group is 3/4" at 100yds.

Now, I can't afford to shoot it all that often. It beats the hell out of my shoulder and it's expensive to shoot.

I've read about the Savage MkII, and Ruger 10/22. Any other options out there? I'm thinking I want a .22LR but as of right now I'm completely open to suggestions. Hoping to keep this little project under $400 including scope. No problem buying used, just trying to learn as cheaply as possible.

Thanks for the help guys

Rimfire Trainer Suggestions $500.00 budget

LOW BUDGET .22 TRAINER - start to "finish"

there's the marlin xt22 series out now which may fit the bill, is low cost and is a warmed over version of the 925 which is an accurate rifle also.

mossberg also has a cheaper bolt .22

for under 400.00 for rifle and optic, you are pretty much narrowed down to a ruger 10/22, savage MKII, marlin XT22 or 925, mossberg 802, 702 or their semi auto counterparts.

i'd stick with a bolt to help mimic the cycling aspect, but out of all the semis (if you go that route) the 10/22 offers the most versatility.

Thanks for all the info! That second link had a TON of information. I think I'm going to look into the Mark II, and modify it from there.

Re: Looking for something to learn with

I recently built a 10 22 for $460.00. The only thing I didn't have to buy was a scope as I already had one.

E.R. Shaw 16.5 inch bull barrel
OD Hogue stock
Weigland Combat Picatinny rail.
Weaver tactical 6 hole scope rings
Caldwell bipod

The Ruger 10 22 is kinda like Barbie for men.

When it comes to rimfires, Rule #1 is "Listen to TP". Rules 2-10 are "See #1".

thanks for the compliment.

actually after playing around a little, i'm starting to lean more toward marlin in the under $400 range. sorry savage, i love you, but the marlins are really offering alot anymore for less money.

Savage MKII F/G vs. Marlin 25/925 sporter barrel showdown Parts 1, 2, and 3

i'd love to see how those heavy barreled xt22s perform. still haven't seen a 100yard or more range report anywhere.

Re: Looking for something to learn with

I'll concur with the XT-22 (and I have 3 Savages). Fine rifle out of the box, and with a little attention a great rifle...

And shoots like this with inexpensive ammo(adjusting scope during these groups)...

Good luck!

Re: Looking for something to learn with

I'm going to say stay away from the 10/22. I have one. It shoots. Just cost a lot of money to get there. Some people's experience probably differs.

I'd grab a mkII with a varmint contour barrel. Grab a decent scope. Super Sniper etc. Shoot the dickens out of it. Upgrade the stock when you can.
