New guy here and I'm wanting to build a .308 for 1000 yard shooting and precision classes. I know that you guys get asked this tons of times a day and I apologize in advance.

I am looking at building from a Savage action if I can find one.

I am also looking at an XLR chassis but wouldn't be against a nice adjustable stock. Looking for a chassis due to it already being set up for DBM and it doesn't have to be bedded.

Barrel- I have no idea in this part. I have been reading a lot and think I want a 22-24 inch in 1/11.25 twist. Looking to shoot 168's and possible 175's. It seems that all the manufactures are like 6-10 months behind. I also don't understand exactly what barrel I need to be looking for. Threaded would also be nice.

Rifle basix- $90 trigger

Optic- SWFA SS 10X

Harris bipod

Looking to build but if I cannot find the parts then I might possibly buy a factory rifle so I could at least start shooting.

If anyone can help me out and show me best prices available and items in stock I would appreciate it.

Find 10FP, 10 P-SP, 10SR, 10TR, Hog Hunter or whatever they call it nowadays (anything with heavy barrel). Shoot the barrel off of it, call Northland for another barrel, rinse, repeat.

Or build of a cheapest SA receiver you can find; but for how cheap you can find a heavy barrel 308 Savage, and how well it will shoot - might as well start there.

Thanks. Only problem I am having a hard time finding any of those models. I'm also not understanding the differences.

Can you remove the sights on the hog hunter? There is one locally to me but I don't like the sights and the barrel is short.

first off I would reconsider the who build first if your really wanting to shoot 1000 yards or more... a 308 isnt the caliber you want... The 308 is just extremely popular because it was a military round... The actual ballistics of a 308 suck. The 308 variants that were derived off the parent 308 case are much more efficient and have better ballistics.. I'm talking about the 260, and 7mm08 in this case... They will out perform a 308 all day long.

If your thinking savage already.. I would just buy a factory rifle... If you want to actually do a build with a custom barrel and such I would not get a savage action... I would get a trued remington action to build off of. Of course this is just my opinion... Some people like savage... others dont.

Thumbs up to both Mo and ducks. Get a 10FCP(if you can't find one on GunsAmerica, GunBroker, or Bud's Gun Shop, just special order it through a local FFL). Once you get it, put 5K rounds through it. Learn the ways of the 175gr SMK, 178 gr AMAX. 168s should be looked at as optional, for 1k they are decidedly blah and 175s are just as good up close. And it's a Savage, so then you can buy a new barrel(Satern, PacNor, and a few others), a GOgauge, and a Savage barrel nut wrench and then change to whatever short action round you want like a 7mm08, 6.5 Creedmore, etc. Or maybe you decide that you want to stay with the .308 - that's the beauty of a Savage, you can do both. Or three, or whatever. You don't even know if this is something that you're really going to like doing, so instead of paying someone to build a rifle, buy a good factory rifle and put the rest of the cash into trigger pulls. A Savage 10FCP is a great platform to continue on with if you decide to.

Get a Remington/ clone if you want to donate money to a gunsmith who will then manage to have your rifle built by sometime next year when he can get around to it.

Savage makes some good rifles. But I would lean closer to a Remington, there's a lot more options and accessories for them. Get you a varmint model, have a smith put a Schneider barrel on it, bed it in a McMillan stock, detachable magazine kit. You got yourself an M40.

I would recommend something better than a 10x scope especially if your goal is 1000 yards. I would take your time, save up and get something better.

I took my time, saved up for what I got and now I have a Sig SSG 3000, McMillan stock, Spuhr 20.6/6mil mount, Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm M5 FFP TMR scope. Angle Cosine Indicator, Harris swivel bipod, accushot monopod. It's a hell of a set up!!

Well that's why you save up, can't rush a precision rifle. Unless you're just made of money, I know I'm not. Your rifle and optics have to be set up right, did you know your rifle being canted 1 degree will throw your impact off by 6 inches at 1000 yards.

If you need a rifle that will make it through a day of shooting (classes or matches) I wouldn't even consider a savage. It doesn't take much for them to stop working. If all you're going to do however is casual target shooting and you can tolerate a sloppy feeling action then you can build a accurate rifle from one. A Remington with a PT&G one piece bolt is a much better choice for reliability.
