Chasing what Bill Alexander calls "the accuracy Demon", I had a brain flash this week and decided to skip the neck turning and just load some test rounds with my most-promising charge of 4064 under 175-gr SMKs and see what happens.

Been using WLRs for more than six months in various tests...I had been a CCI guy for years, had great results with them when I started shooting Highpower, but added Winchester to my list back during the FIRST primer shortage only because they were available.

My new barrel don't like 'em, at least with this load and probably with everything else other than 46.0 of Varget with 155-gr bullets. Both the CCI 200s and the Fed 210s grouped about HALF the size of the WLR loads.

BTW, Hornady's 155-gr A-Max match loads went 2811 fps at had an ES of only 3.9 (sd of 1.6!!!!) in the five rounds I fired. Didn't settle the rifle right on the rear bag (a towel) and had one flyer that put the group to 1.375 inch. The other four were 13/16ths. It's also a lot cheaper than FGMM locally.

Re: Looks Like it was the Primers...

great insight.I use CCI primers but with the shortage and all.the only place I know that has primers has win primers.so I think that I am screwed.like to load the same load or maybe the same load in my 308.seems like when I run out I want shoot for some time.so I guess I'll save them for hard times.

Re: Looks Like it was the Primers...

With the other barrel, the WLRs worked great with my former standard load of 43.0 748 and 168-gr HPBTs from just about any maker.

Have not yet tried that load with the new barrel, as I don't really want to use 168s any more, and 748 is quite temp sensitive according to both an old Hodgdon ad (citing .308 and 168s) AND my own testing.

Moral of the story: Changing primers around might be a good second step to OCW testing, especially if your "best" loads are so-so or their groups are sometimes good, sometimes not.

NOW I get to re-test charges thrown from the old Ideal 55 powder measure. At about 4 fps velocity change per .1 grain powder, I have some hope of NOT weighing charges for loads used at 700 yards and closer...

Oh, the WLRs, as expected, pushed the loads faster than CCIs or F210s...2539 for CCIs, 2552 for F210s, and 2594 for WLRs, at 40°F. 175 SMKs.
