LR 6.5x47 lapua

HI TO ALL, JUST JOINED THIS SITE AND THANKS FOR THE ADD, ACTUALLY BEEN REFERRING TO IT FOR INFO FOR QUITE A WHILE. SO I BUILT THE 6.5 X47 LAPUA DPMS UPPER AND SET OUT TO PLAY. IVE A BATCH OF TWENTY 6.5X47 LAPUA BRASS AND 20 CONVERTED 6.5 CREEDMOOR. GUN SHOOTS EXCELLENT OUT TO 600 YARDS IS ALL IVE HAD TO TEST AT THIS TIME. PROBLEM IS THE PIERCED PRIMERS. NOW I CAN LOAD EM COMFORTABLY TO ABOUT 2675 2680 USING THE CCI MILITARY PRIMER IN THE LAPUA BRASS, IT PIERCES 450'S AND WOLF SR EVEN AT THAT VELOCITY. THE FEDERAL MAGNUM PRIMERS LR HOLD UP TO ABOUT THE SAME PRESSURE LOADING ALTHOUGH SEEMS MY BEST VELOCITY WITH THE 123GRN ELD WAS MID 2800 UNLESS IT WAS A CHRONO FLUKE, GAMMA CHRONY. IM ALWAYS AMAZED AT WHAT VELOCITIES I READ FOLKS CLAIMING WITH THIS ROUND , THO THEIR BARREL IS USUALLY MUCH LONGER 24-28", RIGHT NOW I DONT HAVE THE HIGH PRESSURE BOLT. ID LIKE TO HEAR FROM FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE IF THE HIGH PRESSURE BOLT ALLOWS YOU TO GET THOSE ACTUAL CRAZY VELOCITIES. I CAN GET 2588 OUT OF A 24" GRENDEL SO 2675-2700 DOESNT SEEM THAT MUCH TO ME BASED ON 7.5 GRAINS MORE POWDER AND A BIGGER GUN. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED

Strip down the bolt and take the measurement of the firing pin diameter. Does it measure .075 or .0625? The lapua is high pressure and needs a smaller diameter pin (and pin hole actually) to hold up to the pressure. That extra diameter adds up to the difference of the material bridging the gap being able to hold up without giving way to the pressure or not. If the hole is chamfered that could help encouraging primer material moving more than ideal. If the hole is oversized and there’s lots of slop it can have negative influences as well. A high pressure bolt and corresponding pin should be smaller which is what you want. I’d check your headspace afterwards too, easy check for safety and 30 bucks.

I really enjoy reading stuff like this. I'm putting a new bbl on my rem700. It has a ptg bolt. Origins l firing pin from the rfile when it was a .223. So went from .223 to .308 win to 6.5x47 Lapua now in process. Do you think I should get a new smaller firing pin? I was told by my gunsmith I can use my 6.5 creedmoor dies on the 6.5x47 Lapua but I called Redding and WhI'd den and they both said that I won't be able to size the base. Should I get a new 3 die set, or can I use the bullet micrometer seater.?

So you bought a new bolt to go from the .380" bolt face of the 223 to to the .473" bolt face of a 308?
And the new bolt wasnt complete, you reused your firing pin?
Measure your firing pins diameter and the firing pin hole if you can. The 6.5x47 will be more high pressure and is small rifle primer so you will for what the smaller .0625 firing pin diameter. The larger .075 can lead to punctured primers.
That said if your bolt firing pin hole is .075 throwing in a smaller firing pin will create a huge problem, you need to match both the firing pin diameter and the bolts firing pin hole. So if you have a large pin bolt hole you will need to either get a new bolt with the small firing pin to go with it or you will need to have your bolt face bushed and the firing pin turned down.



You might be able to make the 6.5 creed seating die seat the 6.5x47 but redding is right. The creed and the x47 have different case body diameters and lengths so you need to use the proper sizing die for that. Personally I would get both the appropriate sizer and seater.

As to what set? I would just get a full length sizing die and the seater. I wouldnt bother with 3 die sets that just charge you extra money to make you do an extra step.
