LR rifle Looking for the best

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

you have to choose a caliber first.

Many love the .308 winchester but it's limited to about 1000 yards.

The new kid on the block is the 6.5mm Creedmore. Extremely accurate, cuts wind much better than the .308 win and ammo prices are very good.

And then there are the magnums. Boat loads of magnums out there. Not my cup of tea as I like to spend more time actually shooting and less time recovering from shooting. Also, reloading for magnums is a lot more expensive than standard cartridges.

If you don't reload, I would go with the 6.5mm Creedmore and not look back. Just some excellent ammo (Hornady) being made and sold at very competitive prices.

Good luck and good shooting!

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

You will be buried in "opinions". YOU need to tell us:
1. your budget for rifle , scope & mount
2. do you handload
3. what do you plan to use the rifle for, where and at what ranges
4. your tolerance to noise, blast & recoil
5. your shooting experience

"best" could be anything from a CZ 22 WMR to a Barrett 50 BMG.

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

Mr Humble is correct its what you want and what you are comfortable shooting and what applcation you are using it for. And the big one your budget.

And what you mean by long range..100...200...700...1000...ect???

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

what is your rifle budget?

what is your scope budget?

What distance are you shooting at?

What kind of shooting (off a bench, humping up and down hills, crawling on your belly, etc.)?

What is your shooting experience? If you have shot precision or long range rifles before, than certain rifle will be better for you than others. If you haven't shot precision or long range rifles, your selection of "appropriate" rifles will be very different (unless you want to make yourself look like an idiot).

These are "have to know" facts. Otherwise we are just guessing.

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

Your question makes it clear you've done no research prior to asking your question.

Read up, and if you pay attention, you'll have far more specific questions to ask, which should get you fantastic answers from knowledgeable individuals.

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

Best to learn with I assume?
My recommendation is the same as I got years ago
Rem 700 in 308
Badger 20 moa rail
Badger rings
Harris 6-9 swivel notched legs with Podlock
TAB sling
MilDot Master
Now you can spend as much as you want/can on a scope, but a 10x Super Sniper is hard to beat.

Texasemp
sit back, listen use the search function, pay attention,do some reasearch.then and only then ask you question again.(whispreing) But be careful and dont piss off the animals they dont like incomplete questions.

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

Hey Tex... like others have said, do some searching first. I came on here with a BUNCH of noob-ass questions but I had searched before and had item specific questions concerning my build, and thus got a TON of valuable help from the nice folks on here.

You will find ALOT of help from people here but you have to put some foot work into it first.

I am working on finishing up my first precision bolt gun, just waiting on glass right now. If you want you can see details along with exact parts used here. For me, the LTR was a good bang for the buck starting off.

As it stands now, I don't think anybody can be of much help to you since you have not shared any pertinent information (see posts above).

Excellent build you have there TexanAviator! That is a fine example of a precision tactical rifle!

From now one I'll just point the non-researching new members to you build and say "do that!"

Re: LR rifle Looking for the best

I was in the same boat a few months ago. My only criteria was, anything other than a 308. The 308 is a great proven round but it lacks in sex appeal!! Kinda boring really, and not the best long range cartridge by far. So I bought a rem 700 action for 400 bucks. the action was brand new. I bought a krieger barrel blank for 300. I alI ready new i wanted an AICS stock because they are bad ass!! I then sent my parts to Robert Snyder. He is a great smith and a member here on the hide. I decided to go with a 243AI I always wanted one of these and it has been a lot of fun. I have now a very nice rifle with not a ton of money involved. I could have saved a little money had i went with a different stock, like an HS but i wanted the AICS. I also have done the same and had Robert build me a 6.5 creedmoor. That rifle is equally awesome. Just take your time and think things threw a bit. Good luck! Lee
