I am gather information for a LR308 rifle build. I would like to know what barrel manufactures you like and why.
I know I want a 20" barrel with a 1:10 twist.
I hope this forum is more responsive than another in which I have 0 responses to this question.

I would look at Rainier Arms Select barrels.

Most of the custom shops can turn you a barrel if you like.

thats 100m 5 shot group BVAC bulk ammo those are 1/4'' boxes i was soooo pissed on my 4th shot i pulled that little guy down there but im not worried about that little guy. i have 24'' SS barrel with flutes i have a Leopold MK IV i i was shooting with a backpack from work. I love my DPMS

Yah, I don't think the OP knows what a LR308 is. The LR308 is specific rifle, it's an AR10 style rifle by DPMS. There are a couple different submodels, but no one else makes the "LR308".

Since you ask about different barrel manufacturers, you're not building an LR308, you're building an AR10-type platform. It's a general design category that several companies make guns/parts for. Certain AR10 things may work for you, others will not.

So if you want more replies, ask about .308 AR10s in general.

If you went and bought a LR-308 lower, then you need to first decide on a compatible upper, then a compatible barrel mounting system, and finally a barrel.

A barrel for an LR-308 lower with no intended purpose is pretty vague and unlikely to get forum responses.

What are your intended targets/distances for shooting? 100 yds, 800 yds, I don't know I play video games and like 308 I think...
What ammo are you going to be using? Milsurp 147gr, Match grade 175gr, solid brass hunting handloads, etc.
What are parts do you want on the gun? Certain piston kits and gas ports are mutually exclusive...

And finally, if you're just asking about the barrel manufacturers themselves, then this has absolutely nothing to do with LR-308 rifles, and this thread should be called "Who's your favorite barrel manufacturer and why?".

I'm taking a wild guess that "LR308 build" means he has a pair of dpms 308 receivers.

My 308 AR has a stainless steel barrel from Fulton Armory. It's accurate but a little heavy for the length. So if you don't mind a heavier barrel give them a look.

If I were buying right now I'd probably get a 20" rainier select...if it shoots great, if not I'd trade it in on an ultra match. I emailed them and they said their ultra match should be in stock in a month or so.

Rainier 'ultra match' are shilen blanks in similar profiles to their select barrels. I have a 223 ultra match 16" and it is a shooter.

No it isn't.

AR-10A or AR-10B refers to a specific rifle made by ArmaLite. Just as LR-308 refers to the DPMS, MK3 by CMMG, LAR-8 by RRA and so on. These are trade mark names and each is a different rifle. They may look the same but they are far from the same.

The term '.308 AR platform' well cover all the different manufacturers. You can refer to them further buy the magazine style, M14, SR25, FAL, G3 and so on.

Different styles use different LPK parts, upper and lowers.

After a quick search, why do all these companies in the industry refer to NON-Armalite related products for 308 ARs as "AR10" ?

I see from your profile that you breed cats for a living, that's cute. But since you're not in the firearms industry, why do those of us who actually are use the term "AR10" like I said we do? "AR10" is not only specific to Armalite branded rifles as seen by all of these major companies.

Why get upset over semantics?
I think we all know he is pretty much considering a DPMS base 308 AR.
Let him worry about the matching other parts (barrel extension, bolt, mags, etc).
No need for a useless 'VS' discussion here IMO.
Back to barrel discussion > I have a 18" and a 20" Ultra Match Shilen/Rainier.
The 18" just went back for high pressure on rounds ~ apparently they had a bad batch.
It was accurate as hell though.
The 20" is now undergoing testing and tbd.

Rainier Select Barrels are ok. Selects are 1:11 Twist with 3-groove Polygonal Rifling. Rainier Ultramatch Barrels are 1:10 Twist with 6-groove Rectangular Rifling. Both are Button formed rifling.

I currently have two Select barrels (18" & 20") and have not tried a Ultramatch yet but as soon as they are available I will purchase and tryout.

AR10 is for all sorts and purposes an Armalite trademark. I knew right off the bat what the OP was talking about when he said LR308, that either meant one of two things to me and possibly both. He had DPMS receivers or wanted a LR308 pattern gun (for PMags). Just out of curiosity what part of this industry are you in? Someone needs to sit down and explain what AR10 actually means......7 of my first 8 google search for AR10 comes straight back to Armalite

The AR-10 is an American 7.62 mm battle rifle developed by Eugene Stoner in the late 1950s at ArmaLite

as to the OP's question, I would go with Rainiers Select Match barrels or try and find a Kreiger.

Headspace too tight. A barrel can headspace just fine with one bolt but not so much with another. Also a bolt that closes on a GO but not a NO GO can still be too tight to function 100%. Extraction problems, rounds sticking in the chamber, excessive pressure signs on brass are what you will see if this is you.

I have a Rainier's Select 18 inch middy on my Mega MA Ten. I had it out yesterday morning and with 168 AMAX handloads and my first five round group was 1 inch center to center (at 100 yards) excluding called flier (which was my fault).

For me personally I have been able to shoot 12x12 plates about 80% of the time at 600 yards. Yes that only means a 2 MOA bbl, but alot of it has to do with my lack of shooting skills and ammo selection (soft points). Even at 2 MOA with hunting ammo that means Minute of Elk to me.

I am more then pleased with this bbl and have upwards of 700-800 rounds through it with no problems. I am glad I got the Select bbl.

I have a stainless one. For the money it is a very accurate barrel but a bit heavy for the length.

Thanks to even more of the members for the positive responses.
Since KSwift chimed in again... maybe he's right. I should have asked about barrel manufactures to fit a DPMS LR308 upper and DPMS LR308 pattern lower with the possibility of MagPul stock, grip and mags with a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4x20mm in a LaRue mount... specific enough.. ~sigh~
My understanding is AR10 is used as a general term for a 308 style ar15 just as ar15 is use for ANY "black rifle" or in other words a rifle based on Eugene Stoner's design (look and shape). IE POF-USA, DPMS, Rock River, Stagg Arms, Colt, S&W, Ruger, ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC.

Biggest problem you'll find right now is bolt carrier group availability...if you have one great, mail it to rainier and have them headspace it to a 16" rainier select and mail it back to you. Would fit great on the hypothetical rifle you just spelled out.

If not...start shopping around for one because the damn things are scarce.

Only because ignorant people perpetuate it's improper use. There are scores of words improperly used day after day.

AR-10 is trademarked by Armalite. No only is any other use incorrect, but if it's done so in the "industry" it can result in legal action.

Most of us in the "industry" try to refer to things by their correct names so as to limit confusion as serve as an example to others. It also prevents you from looking foolish when someone quotes you later on.

Thermos comes to mind as well as Kleenex. The problem begins when folks associate the brand with a function. It's why smart marketers always support the brand with a statement about its function, like Thermos vacuum bottle, or Kleenex tissue. Most often the problem begins when the brand and product are seen as synonomus in a new product catagory. The brand becomes the product discription, like Coke. Competitors making a product with an identical function as the brand name are forced to describe their product sometimes in terms not recognized, which can be quite a challange. At one time the word cola was foreign to most, what's a cola?

Xerox is another prime example. The company actually has to affirmatively market the product like Xerox did making sure everbody knew that they were called photocopies and not Xerox copies. As such, Armalite could potentially lose the AR-10 trademark if things continue their present course.

I have several long range semi autos.

One is for sale, let me know if you have any interest. It has the Rainier Arms Ultra Match.

However, on the subject of barrels, I have:

DPMS x1
Rainier Arms Ultra Match x3
Black Hole Weaponry (1x11) x1

So far my favorites are the Ultra Match barrels. (I have shot two of them, and gotten phenomenal accuracy, when the rest of the build is up to snuff as well.)

Out of my 20", if I do my part, 3" groups at 400+ yards are no question. I haven't gotten a chance to run these any further, but later this summer, I am planning a trip to go shoot at 1200 with all my new long range toys.
