Laughing, but in reality not funny at all. Any machine with an IP addy can be hacked if you can get in thru any door. We proved this on a Very large gen set that was being decommissioned an to be sold as scarp. It was scrap, about 3 minutes after we got into the software. Reset the starter disconnect drop out speed, raised the over speed shut down hertz setting, by taking control of the Speed controller. Reprogrammed the flywheel tooth count in the ECU module. Remotely stopped the until, hit enter an fired her back up, that 1200 RPM 3 Mw diesel gen-set became a bomb to the point we used the std industry term of " That Bitch Came Un-Cunted". The main exciter rotor went to shit somewhere around 2700RPM, the starter ripped the gear cover to shit at about 2000rpm. That bitch throw-ed shit 200yds threw a few walls.
What uncle learned was, "Never Ever" have a machine where certain set points can be changed remotely, an only allow some set points to be changed locally, by key, cleared people. Had that unit been on line during a real issue, everything down stream would have went to shit, assuming those people survived the shrapnel. The interesting thing is, many to big to fail company's still to this day, have set's that can be accessed remotely,.... Most all defense related shit these days, this has been addressed, but there are other things that can be took over remotely that can do just as much related damage. Technology works both ways, an what is "Convenient" is the best way in most of the time.
