Went through infantry sniper course @ Lewis back b4 sniper course was moved to Benning. Run w/ the M21 with ART-II scopes (oh, we thought we were high-speed coming in with those cromagnon scopes) and typical runs @ 600 meters. Anyone recall those days and the bluffs of Lewis overlooking the pines?

Re: M-21 vets out there?

I went to the USAMU Sniper School in 1978 using the M-21. I then taught sniper schools for the Guard and RA at Ft Richardson AK, int the 80s, first using M1C/Ds then switched to M-21s.

The M-21 is a fine system. From my experience they took less maintance then many would lead you to believe. In fact the NRA had an article about them a few years back, in SE Asia the M-21 spent less time in maintaince shops then the Marines M-40.

We shot to 900 meters at Benning, and I went to 1100 at Ft Richardson. Those guns could do it. Like anything else, the weak link in any system is the shooter.

Re: M-21 vets out there?

Navy in 1993. We still had 2 rifles with ARTs and 3 with M1A Ultra's. We took these rifles out to 600yds at Camp Blanding. The only problem we had was the A170 ammo was Federal 168gr with spun-nose bullets. After 300yds it was as bad as shooting Special Ball. We didn't have much, so at 100 & 200 we shot M80 ball.

ART unlugged in straight wood stocks with SAK medium weight NM barrels - would shoot sub-moa with M80 at 200yds off sandbags!

Re: M-21 vets out there?

One more thing about the M21. I would have bet big money on this and lost.

We were doing the Night Firing Phase, using Starlight Scopes. One of the instructors mentioned there would would be no muzzle flash on the M21 using M-118 ammo.

I was involved in HP with M14/M1As before I went to sniper school. I've been to late practices in low light and THOUGHT I've seen the muzzle flash.

I'm sure glad I had enough sense to keep my mouth shut, because there was no detectable muzzle flash with the M21 shooting M118. Shocked the poop out of me. Guess those flash suppressors have more use then for hanging a bayonet.

We had to have an 1.5 shot/hit ratio to graduate. It wasn't that hard with this rifle.
