I wanted to get your guys opinion on the compact M&P's, I have seen on other forums that they were having problems with magazines dropping at random and wanted to know has this been fixed or are there still problems. Right now I am looking at the M&P compact 9mm or the glock 19.

ER

I have always been a Sig/H&K guy my entire life. I shot a Walther P99c which i fell in love with and learned later, that the M&P9 was basically a further refinement of the Walther P99 platform since S&W and Walther have very close relations.

Needless to say that after shooting an M&P9c i fell in love with it. I have had mine for about 6months and have put over 3000 rounds thru it without a SINGLE malfunction. I have fed it every type of ammo including without any issues. It feels so much better in the hand than a glock 19 and with the adjustable back straps there is one that fits your grip just right. It also is very soft shooting in my opinion. Not that the 9mm is a hard but it is softer to me compared to my other 9mm i own.

I installed warren tactical sights along with the Apex sear and radiused plunged and has made the trigger to die for. I really cant complain and it has become my go to and daily carry 9mm inside a comptaac Minotar holster.

They fixed the mag problem by increasing the spring tension a smidge. The bigger concern with earlier M&P runs was broken strikers. S&W has since revamped the striker design. If you pull it in the store before you buy it, the newer ones are a stainless steel color, the earlier are blued. You can buy the newer ones from Brownells for about 40-60 bucks. Thats what I did when the new design came out. Never had a problem with my older striker.

I own a full size 9 that I carry on duty and have a compact 9 for off duty. If you buy one I would send it off and have a little trigger work done on it. For less than 100 bucks it really smoothes out the action and weight of the trigger. My trigger pull feels lighter and smoother than my 1911. Though the Colt still has less pretravel.

I would buy the smith, the interchangeable backstraps make for a better fit on different hands. I think the new Gen 4 glocks have this as well. Either gun will do very well for you and you won't regret it. I suggest going to a range that rents pistols and try both.

Re: M&P Compact

I have always been a huge fan of the G19. I've owned both the G19 and G26 at the same time and thought that it was a great system.

I've also got the M&P9c which has taken the place of my G19 as my go to gun. The biggest weakness is the M&P's not so great trigger. All of the trigger issues can be address by aftermarket parts from Apex Tactical. I prefer the ergos of the M&P over the Gen3 Glock, but plan to give the Gen4s a try when they work out the kinks.

I've sold all my glocks, but still have Gen3 G19. I've since replaced my glocks with a M&P40, M&P9c, M&P45c. All have the aftermarket Apex kits and are great!

You don't need anything from APEX to fix the trigger, all you need is a little work on whats there.

Re: M&P Compact

The biggest problem that I have found with the S&W's is that they are a tweener, their compacts arent as compact as anything else out there, but they arent the size of a mid size from anybody else.

Re: M&P Compact

The M&P compacts are pretty soft shooting (more so than the equivalent sized Glocks).

The trouble is that they're made by S&W.

The mag dropping issue was related to using a plastic magazine catch on a metal magazine notch. It was just a poor design that caused wear to occur rapidly.

The two real significant problems they have today is their strikers (they've done like 5 versions of them, and each time, they say "it's fixed". I don't trust that it is, and only time will tell if it really is or not). The second, and more serious problem is that the 9mm and .40S&W guns unlock too fast.

Some loads will have the gun unlocking before the bullets leave the barrel, leading to heavier bullets shooting higher.

If you play with an M&P, watch how easily the slide moves back, and how fast the barrel drops down.

Compare that to a Glock, and see how much more travel is required to get the barrel to drop down (watch from 2:33 on):

You should be able to feel it as you slowly work the slide in and out of lock-up, and you can start to see it in the above video examples.

M&P owners can check this themselves by shooting groups at 25y with 2 very different weight bullet (115gr and 147gr 9mm, or 155gr and 180gr .40S&W) and check to see if your POI changes by a measurable amount. Shoot that same ammo through a Glock, Sig, HK, etc...then note if the difference in POI is comparable or not.

The M&P45's seem to stay locked up longer, and aren't exhibited some of these swings in POI and accuracy that the 9mm and .40S&W guns are.

If you look around at some of the respected industry guys that were shooting M&P's one and two years ago...check to see how many still are.

All in all, they're relatively good guns for most people. They would be a second choice to Glocks for me though, currently (in 9mm or .40S&W).

Comp-Tac CTAC. I went with the CTAC over the MTAC for the versatility of being able to carry in shorts and a t-shirt as well as jeans and a coat. The thinner profile of the CTAC sold me. Once I got it adjusted at the correct angle and figured out where it sits best on me, my wife hasn't been able to tell if I'm carrying or not without the touch test. There are probably more comfortable holsters out there, but $80 for a durable Kydex sheath and replaceable parts in the event that there is a breakage is worth it to me.

I've carried for about 14 hours before working outside in the Kentucky summer and the only discomfort I had was the tension from stress from being constantly aware of everyone around me. It's comfortable enough so that I don't leave my gun at home, and that's the important part.

Re: M&P Compact

Just picked up the m&p 40 compact any recommendations for some night sights? or do any of you use them? Already got my holster answer, Thanks.

Warrens or Heinie's.

Re: M&P Compact

I carry the .40 S&W MP and the wife carries the .40 S&W MPc.. we both like shooting in and we have the crimson trace on them.

I still focus front site when shooting... but some you have to expect that it may not be in your mind for proper follow rules in a bad situaion.

They shoot welll.. may a little less trigger creep.. I cannot seem to find the sear point for double taps.

The triggers are so easy to work on, if you are interested I can give you a link to some easy instructions.
