I have an older Springfield Armory M1A (that seems to have quite a few USGI parts -- I know it's been used at Camp Perry at least three times). I decided to give it a thorough cleaning and inspection, including the gas port and plug.

Since I've never touched that part, I can only assume that a previous owner or 'smith installed it using a breaker bar. Right now, it's marinating in Kroil, but I don't have high hopes for that to work within my lifetime.

I checked this forum and the m14forum.com, but did not find anything useful, other than "use more torque." Even with the special tool that holds the gas port assembly so it doesn't turn, I've applied all the torque I feel comfortable doing.

Is anyone aware of a non-destructive solution to remove the plug?

Thank you,
Richard
