Just ship that bad boy to me, I'll strip it down and recycle it for you at no charge.

Re: M1A vs. AR10 7.62 NATO platform?

well from first hand ecxperience in the army. reliability definately goes to the m1 the garand style action leaves little room for mech errors although it lacks that sub moa accuary that is desired. ok the ar10/ m110 wich we use is decent at best. good for sub moa shots out to about 700m but after that it gets allitle dicey, its not bad but the gas driven piston equipped with suppresor blows back alot of corbon into the mag wich inheritly makes it less accurate. my vote is for the m1 all the way

2 moa with surplus socom 16 about 9 1/2 lbs. unloaded and handles like a friggin dream!!! Most true shooters can do 60-80% of the accurizing work on an M14 series rifle them selves. I will be stiffening the front end of the stock, unitizing the gas system and doing a front ferrule modification myself and it wont cost me much at all ($50) as well as tuning the gas system. spend some time at http://m14tfl.com and you'll learn everything you need to know and then some about the system. I can hit 6" swinging steal targets at 250 yards all day long with milsurp using an EOtech.

Thanks! I rate my socom 2nd in importance to my girl friend.

I'll shim it if it needs it after unitizing but I'm a boilermaker so I can weld it in my sleep so it wont cost me anything.

Dude! Ya you might need help with that 6MOA is 60 inch at 1K. You need lots of help with that.

Re: M1A vs. AR10 7.62 NATO platform?

When I welded a few front bands to a few gas cylinders about 15 years ago, I first bent the "ears" that held the handguard in place and stripped the parkerizing from the underside (so the RTV the handguard was glued in place with would stick better). I drilled (2) 5/32" holes, 1 on either side, in the middle, where the "meat" is on the gas cylinder. I then welded the cyl to the band at these holes with a mini-tig rig with 1/16" tungsten, using 1/16" 309 wire for the filler. I then ran a reamer thru the hole for the gas shutoff valve, since that aspect of the rifle was supposed to be functional for NM. If I shimmed at all, it was to center the gas port over the port in the barrel.

Re: M1A vs. AR10 7.62 NATO platform?

A buddy of mine has a really nice M14. He rebuilt it from parts he's gathered over the years and has spent well over $3k gettin it to around 1.5MOA.

When I told him that I was wanting a semi-auto .308/7.62, he told me to look at the AR platform instead if money was at all a concern. Since it is, I'm looking at my options with the AR-10 types.

Everyone always brings up money with firearms! Anyone ever hear of patients? It always amazes me when people say they have X amount to spend and cant go much higher. Take a little more time to save the extra money and get what you want not whats cheaper. The added anticipation will only make it that much better! I make sure to get what I want and do what it takes to get it and when I do I'm always happier and end up with the better toys.

I just like working on my guns myself. I feel more intimately familiar with them and have a better idea what there capable of. That and I love tinkering with them almost as much as shooting them.

I think you mean 'patience'.

And yes, I've heard of it, it's what keeps me waiting for a PST scope for my AR308 rather than just putting a Nightforce on my credit card.

Re: M1A vs. AR10 7.62 NATO platform?

<span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">ARMALITE AR-10</span> </span>

its a parts gun that i built up,. it is closest to the AR-10TBNF with the main diffrence being i had a 24in. 1:11.25 Rock Creek barrel installed instead of the 20in tube Armalite uses. i am seriously thinking about swapping the 3.5-10X Leupold for the 3-15X Premier that is currently on top of my M82, but i think i am going to wait and either get another Premier or at the very least get the 14x Leupy.

note the Surefire suppressor addadptor/brake,.. its the same one that i have on my 700 5R in .300WM, so both rifles can use the same suppressor once i get the $$$$ to pay for the can. (Surefire cans ain't cheap or else i'd just buy two)

For me, it's not a matter of spending the money that I have now on a gun that fits today's budget. It's a matter of buying the best value firearm. Sometimes I prefer to build it up slowly; other times I decide on a firearm and save up.

The same goes for cars, houses, anything. I don't see the point in blowing $150k on a Benz sportscar, when a $35k Hemi Charger or bad ass camaro will get me from point A-B just the same and probably faster. I buy firearms that I enjoy and that I like for myself. Your last line kind of irked me because spending more money doesn't equate to a better firearm.

I think the AR-10 is a great value. I'm going to get a DPMS .308 by Christmas and will decide on a Socom or NM M1A for next Christmas.
