Im thinking of getting another .338 and I was wondering about how the Badger m2008 compares to the AI receiver. They look very similar to me. Well, what I mean is that externally the Badger looks more like an AI action than like a Rem 700 action. Anyone ever compare them both?

There was a lot of discussion about this when the Badger action came out. There are some similarities, but one of the major differences is the trigger.

The conclusion was, the Badger M2008 is a great action but, an AI it is not.

Care to elaborate why?

I have one of the Badger Lapua receivers, you can't go wrong with em, excellent receivers for sure. I highly recommend them!

Since the Surgeon XL is one of the other receivers I was considering I would really appreciate a fully objective comparison of the 3 (AI, M2008, Surgeon) as well.
I was planning on using an AICS stock, if that matters.

If you are looking for an action to build on, why are you including the AI? I don't believe you can buy an AI action, only a complete rifle.

I think the AI actions use 4 bolts to secure to chassis , and the Badger 2 bolts . </div></div>The AWSM (discussed here) is permanently bonded to the chassis.

If I choose the AI action then I am getting the complete rifle. I just need to know that it is worth the extra coin over a rifle built with a Badger or Surgeon receiver.

Having owned all 3 rifles you are looking at I would say no the AI isn't worth the extra money. The badger is a very close copy of the AI and you can get a complete rifle built for less than half of the cost of the AI. I have several badger rifles and they are great guns. The one advantage the badger has over a surgeon XL is the short bolt throw, the advantage the surgeon has over the badger is the integrated scope rail, they are both solid actions. Come to think of it you could probably have a badger and surgeon xl built for the cost of a AI.

10-4. Like AdamB said, you could build one of each for the price of an AI. It really is a coin toss over which one to use. The Badger is a little heavier too if that matters.
