Hey all I just started messing around with loading .308 loads and Im wondering what standard bullet weight and powder load is that the M24/M40 rounds (7.62 Nato) that the military uses for there marksman. I know they watch lot numbers and such but Im just looking for a starting point for my Rem 700.

175 grain bullet (either SMK or Berger non VLD) with either Varget, RE-15 or IMR 4895 or IMR 4064 will get you to the neighborhood where you're looking.

EDIT:

If you're new to handloading get a good manual. I suggest the Lyman's Centerfire Handloading Manual and read all the non-caliber specific chapters first. Especially the safety chapters.

Re: M24/M40 Ammo Load?

With the 168-180 grain a good all around loads for long barrel life is start with 39 gr. 4895 and don't go over 40. The biggest mistake many make is trying to make a 30.06 out of a 308. You don't need to push the envelope to obtain excellent results. Case in point go to http://www.6mmbr.com/30BR.html and read about the outstanding scores delivered by this marvelous little round.
My only experience was a couple years ago I stopped by a range on the way home from a gun show and this guy was breaking in a new barrel shooting at 1/8" dots at 100 yards and he had about fifteen rounds on the barrel and had not failed to touch a dot yet ! ! ! ! When you read the article you will see how well and how long they shoot.

Re: M24/M40 Ammo Load?

If you want a tack driving load in 308, try 43.0- 43.5 IMR 4064 under a 168 HPBT. 43.5 was the load from 6mmBR.com, but I stopped at 43. Stopped at 42.5 for my AR-10 and still get less than 3/4" 5 shot groups. That's outside cut to outside cut, so from center to center, it's really tighter than that.

175grn sierra matchking,43 grns Varget or 43 grns W748,2.80 oal,210 or 210m primers.Fed brass,Lapua or Nolser. you should be in the 2650 fps range.start low and work up gradualy checking pressure signs.
I tried the 42-43.1 grns of Reloader 15 with 175smks,in Lake city match brass,210m primers and found pressure signs,so i assume my chamber is way tight for the LC brass?.The ingredients are similar to the militarys M118LR cartrige.

The actual M118lr load is

175gr SMK
43.1gr/RL15
LC Brass
Primer unknown.

I use Norma Brass and Fed 210M primers.
