Ok, before you roast me cause there is a few threads about M40A3 builds.... well I've searched them all!!

There is still some questions that remain unanswered for myelf, dont know if I missed them in the threads for what.

Well, here we go!!!

1. action and barrel markings. What markings are on the barrels? Also, on the actions, last four serial digits stamped on bolt handle... what about the serial number itself? Does it have "U.S" in front like the M40A1?

2. Are the M40A3's just slotted for the DD Ross rail, or are they clip slotted as well. Heard conflicting ideas here too?

3. Action years/prefixes. What are the sorted after prefixes for the M40A3 builds? I have heard "C", "E", and "G".

4. The DD Ross floor plate and Badger M5. There was some contradiction between if the M40A3's actually used the Badger, or ere they used on the M40A5's. Heard it was year specific. After 2007 Badger was used? Is this true?

Is there any other features you guys can think of?

I am just trying to make this an absolute perfect clone!! I would hate to go to all this effort and miss something simple!

Thanks for the help.

Re: M40A3 questions need answered!

I have a m40a3 spec build rifle being built by ga precision and mines the 2007 and earlier version. Meaning it used the dd ross steel floorplate. One thing about the military is sometimes they phase in parts or upgrades and im not an expert but its possible some m40a3's were using the badger dbm system. I watched modern snipers marines on tv and they had the m40a3's with badgers so that where i got my info from.

As for the G or C E prefixes.....george from ga precision mentioned something about that....here it is

From the thread question for gap m40a3 or m40a5 owners

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...003#Post2415003

"Serial # does not matter, noone has a correct serial # M40A3 or A5 as that would require stealing an action from the USMC. So an E or G Prefix is correct for an M40A3 any of them will do"

If you want a 100% build then give ga precision a call.

Re: M40A3 questions need answered!

The person to contact would be 7mmRm. Anyways I will chip in what I learned (or what I thought I learned anyways)
1. There is a marking PWS-P on the barrel, and no U.S. marking above the serial number and no last 4 digits on bolt handle
2. They are fully clipslotted (not the old remington squared clip slot)
3. As far C E G prefixes go I am pretty sure the corps recieved new actions when they went to the A3 so no you don't need a C E G prefix
4. Before 2007, the M40A3 used a DD Ross recoil lug, and DD ross bottom metal. After 2007, newer A3's were done with badger recoil lugs and badger M5 detachable bottom metal. (personally I prefer the latter) Also on the earlier pre 2007 A3's they used the USO MST-100 dayscope and afterwards used the SB 3-12x50 MTC turret Gen II ret dayscope. (note there was a transition period, the first SB's the USMC received were 3-12x50 with the windowed turrets like the civilian model)

Re: M40A3 questions need answered!

I have just a few corrections.
1. Correction on the last 4 stamped on the bolt handle as well.

3. On the M40a3 the prefix was E. I didnt see any that were C. The M40a5 has a prefix G and I think that those are brand new actions. This is based on that the M40a3 has a cutout for a side bolt release. After the Corps got tired of fixing them they expoxied them up and stayed that way until they got new actions.

Now this is what I have seen with our unit guns and other guns from other units. I hope that this helps out a little.

Re: M40A3 questions need answered!

My old unit had DD ross floor plates on all the 40's. They then got the rail system upfront bedded to the stock.

We did not send the m40a3's off to be turned into a5's. We got new rifles that were a5's. They had the Badger M5's, rail up front, and the surfire brake. Also, for the m40a5's with the brake are still 24''. I never saw one cut down to 20''

Hope this helps some, but remember every unit is different...

Re: M40A3 questions need answered!

Thanks guys..... this is great info!!!

It looks like I have my build very very close to being the exact correct way.

The only components I will miss out on is the M24 trigger...... what makes them so special?

Cheers

Re: M40A3 questions need answered!

Dude, you buy/build rifles and sell them faster than I can keep up! The 300 WSM is gone, the 280 is up for sale, and the 6.5 as well. You've only had the 280 for five minutes. What gives?

Because you can adjust the weight of the trigger through the trigger guard without taking the rifle apart. Remington only makes them for the M24 and M40. Not for civilians.

Over the last few years I have been turning rifles over at a pretty quick rate. Full custom tactical and benchrest rifles. What I have been doing is trying different gear on most builds.. from stocks, actions, barrels, scopes... and now have a pretty good idea on what components work really well for different applications.

I have learnt a hell of a lot along the way, and it has been good!

I am now past that.. the fun has to stop and now have to build up some rifles that I want to keep... and use. I dont want anymore of these rifles that sit in the safe and dont get used a great deal.

The M40A3 is something that I really like, I like its pedigree, and want one built as close as I can to the real deal. I plan on this rifles being a rifle that I hang onto for a very long time.

All my other rifles have just been rifles... but this one already I can tell I have some pride in the build.

I would like to compliment it with a M40A1 with a return stock.. but that will be after the M40A3.

I would also like a nice original WW2 sniper rifle, more for the collector aspect of the rifle.. but know I will be shelling out some serious cash for one.

I think I am past all the flashy gear... all the accessories...

Bring on the M40A3!

Also another big thanks to everyone that has PM'd me and helped out with this build for me. It is much appreciated!

Cheers
