I have asked this on another forum but I would like some more opions. I need a LPK and trigger.I am thinking of this

http://palmettostatearmory.com/1592.php

or a basic lpk from rainier

http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1934

with

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=247530&cm_mmc=Froogle-_-Gunsmithing%20-%20AR-15%20Parts%20(Not%20Magazines)-_-PriceCompListing-_-247530

what do you guys think I want to do it right the first time. If I go with the first one will it work? has anyone used it?

Re: MA-ten Build Question

unless i am mistaken, you will have the take down pins and dust cover installed. you might be best off getting the cheapest LPK or buying just the parts you need like detents and springs since you wont need alot of whats in the LPK. fulton is having a 15% off sale if that helps. i hope to be getting a MA-10 myself soon

Re: MA-ten Build Question

thanks for the heads up I will go there. I am not sure what everything is called. I usually buy a stripped lower and a lpk and use everything.

Re: MA-ten Build Question

i think all you will need is the detent pin and spring for the safety. mega installs the takedown pins and bolt catch screw. two pins for the trigger and hammer unless you get a trigger that has them. and the pin and spring for the buffer. mag release button, catch and spring. they include the charging handle too. you may need the bolt catch too. price it all and compare to a $65 LPK. for i think $50 you can get the factory trigger worked at triggerwork.net and that may keep you happy for a while. also look at the trigger that Mega sells.

Re: MA-ten Build Question

Just some notes to keep in mind when you go to finish your MEGA upper:

> Avoid Armalite barrels on the MA-10 upper unless you are OK with 1/4" gap between the gas block and the hand guard leading edge or you intend to use HGs that extend over the gas block. (this is due to Armalite using a 1/4" longer gas system than KAC/DPMS and the MA-10 uses KAC/DPMS threaded barrel nuts & hand guards)

> You are well advised to keep your barrel and bolt carrier group from the same maker (unless they were hand fit by a gunsmith)

Yep. I had to do the same thing using an Phase5 EBRv2 bolt catch.

Also, I went with an Armalite barrel extension and from everyone's experience, including mine, the Armalite extension is an extremely tight fit on the Mega upper. Those who went with DPMS extensions had much easier time slipping the barrel onto the upper. I had to freeze the barrel and apply a heat gun to the upper to get the barrel on. Others reported having to strip the coating from the inside of the upper where the barrel extension slips onto the upper receiver. YMMV.

As for the LPK, if you aren't going to use the included trigger, get the cheapest kit you can find because most of the pieces you'll need aren't high stress parts anyway. If you plan to use the trigger from the kit, then, get a higher quality LPK. The one from Palmetto is good. So is a Daniels Defense LPK.

Re: MA-ten Build Question

What buffer spring were you using? My ma/ten wouldnt lock back open on a empty mag. Replaced the buffer spring with a slash modified buffer spring and it locks back now.

Re: MA-ten Build Question

For my MaTen i so far have
The MaTen
Magpul Prs
Enhanced Ergo Grip
Chrome DPMS Bolt Carrier
JP Enhanced 308 Bolt
Ar Gold 308 Trigger
Futon Armory LPK minus grip & trigger
DPMS Bolt Catch
Standard A1 Buffer Tube w/ AR10 Spring & Buffer
Undecided on my rail
Waiting on my 24' crowned Krieger barrel
USO SN3 or Vortex Razor HD
It's a beautiful piece of work but I still have 5 months to wait for my barrel .

My spring depressed all the way onto the pin so I ended up dremeling off a little on the catch itself to get it to pivot up enough to catch the bolt.

Re: MA-ten Build Question

nice build man. i like that, its clean. how long is the barrel? whats it weigh? they all seem to be so nose heavy, lol. im going to try helium balloons to counter the weight

Re: MA-ten Build Question

they always end up at 13.5 pounds it seems. i need to weigh this latest MA-10 build, but i cant see it changing with the same parts fron the JD machine or DPMS upper/lower. pic below, with full mag, 1-4x. im just too lazy to weight it, lol, its behind a few things in the safe, the scale is on the back porch, its cold and i didnt wanna

Re: MA-ten Build Question

I'd say the barrel and stock are the two main components that are going to determine the weight of your rifle (aside from the optic and bipod of course). I don't see a way to get the weight much lower when going with a stainless barrel and a PRS stock.

Re: MA-ten Build Question

I plan on starting my first AR build in April. I am up in the air between this and a Grendel. My first question is has anyone done a MEGA build in 260 or 7-08? And for the first time AR build is this a little out of my league? I have done a lot of reading about the MA-ten and some say everything goes smooth while other seem to have a little trouble in the build process. I should have around $1,200 to 1,500 to get the ball rolling and will be able to finish it off my mid summer. Thoughts?

Re: MA-ten Build Question

Building up a MA-Ten isn't much different than building an AR15. It may be a bit easier because the upper is partially built up already. To simplify, I suggest getting your barrel and bolt from the same vendor so that they can match those up. No need to test headspace.

Re: MA-ten Build Question

I would like to do one of these builds soon.

My plan is to build it battle rifle style with a light profile 20" chrome lined barrel, and probably an Vltor E-mod stock.

I am hoping that with this setup it won't weigh any more than a comparably set up battle rifle like an M-14... i.e., around 9 lbs. or so unloaded without an optic.

What do you guys think... could I make that weight figure using an Armalite AR-10 20" barrel, with a 12" TRX Extreme handguard over it?

Here's some weights to give you an idea:

Rainier Arms UM 20" w/ DPMS FH and gas tube –– 3lb. 3.75 oz.
Noveske 16" bbl -- 2lb. 8oz.
PWS FSC30 -- 3.75oz
Daniel Defense 7.62 Lite 12" complete kit –– 1lb. 3.75oz.
Rainier Arms 11" Rail with bbl nut -- 1lb. 4oz.
PRI front sight block with sight –– 3.25 oz.
MagPul ACR, buffer tube, spring, ASAP, Slash carbine buffer –– 1lb. 11.75oz.
Magpul PRS with extension tube, rifle buffer and spring -- 2lb. 6oz.
Fulton Armory BCG –– 1lb. 2.75oz.
Mega MA-TEN Upper Receiver –– 15.75 oz.
Mega MA-TEN Lower Receiver with installed parts (minus stock) –– 1lb. 5oz.
Magpul PMAG (empty) –– 6.25oz.
Troy rear BUIS –– 1.75oz

My setup, with Noveske 16", Rainier Rail and PRS is a few oz under 10lbs. I have a UBR coming today to try out for size, but it won't save much if any weight.

Just remember that balance affects weight perception the most. I had a DPMS SASS with a Magpul MOE stock on it...that was a mistake. It felt like it was 15 lbs or more. After putting a PRS on it, it balanced out and felt "lighter."

Kreiger had me send the bolt so they could headspace it
