I dunno, I bought one out of the first batch and had 1 of the first failures. Those guys have been real good on making this problem right. If your're gonna buy one, why wait and waste good shooting time over it? If the clip breaks before they have this figured out just get a new clip. Or order a couple of extra with your unit.

Interesting... because I went and did my own little test this morning.

Thats 15 rounds @ 100yds from a Savage 12 F/TR .308 Win. 3 rounds without the bayonet strapped on, then 3 rounds each at 6, 9, 3, and 12. Target is the center (big) diamond on a Champion/Redfield sight-in target.

The top hole and the one just peeking out @ 9 o'clock were from the first group (without the bayonet mounted). The one low and left, and the one wide right were literally 'Aw crap!' called bad shots due to shooter error. The slight trend 'down' may be do in part to the aiming point just being flat gone... those bullet holes do tend to 'suck ya in', at least for me.

Granted, this gun has a barrel that measures just a fuzz under 1" @ the muzzle... but it is also a 30" long tube, which seems like it might be a little more susceptible to something hanging off of it. Load was B185LRBT @ ~2650fps avg, and no noticeable change in readings regardless of how the bayo was oriented.

Hopefully I will have a chance to do some practice @ 300 & 600yds with a target puller over the next week or so... strongly tempted to shoot my sighters, then shoot the first half of the string w/o the bayo and the second half with the bayo strapped on...

+1 I luckily havent broken my clip yet but even though it (the clip) had bad reviews I still went out and bought 3 units. I figured if its that much of an issue they should beef it up sooner or later.

I love the simplicity of it, I wouldnt wait if I were you. Who knows if it keeps selling like hotcakes they may raise the price???

Thats great if your rifle doesnt change POI. I didnt shoot at the same target like you did for 15 rounds with and without bayo attached.

I shot without the bayo then with the bayo attached for 10 rounds each and the POI was different as I mentioned.

I will do as you did the next time out and shoot each position at the same target. And post up what happens!

No problem! you should just try it to see what you find. as with monte's post it seems he didnt shift as much. I will try to get out again today and do as he did and see what happens.

To answer your question No, I didnt see any significant change in MV readings at the different positions. In fact, they were pretty much the same as those I got from the std. 6 o'clock position.

Well I finally was able to get to the range today but due to unforseen circumstances I didnt get much time so I did a modified test LOL! Its not much of a sample I guess only was able to get 12 of the 15 rounds downrange before ceasefire was called for the day.

Anyway heres the pic of the group

This was shot with a semi-custom 280 AI running 168 gr Berger Hunting VLD's. The middle group is 5 shots w/out bayonet. Then what I did was start at the 3 o'clock position and fired one round per position as I rotated the bayo around the barrel in a clockwise rotation. POA was the red diamond below the group.

As you can see the shots pretty much mirrored what I did with the bayo. The far right was a mess up on me as it was raining and I rushed that one. Outside of that the shots were pretty even. I didnt do a 3,6,9,12 I just started at 3 and ended at 12 with small movements in between per round fired.

My reasoning for this was that if I could shoot a group then strap on the bayo. And because the POI was pretty consistent I could shoot a ring around the group shot w/out the bayo. Which is pretty much what happened LOL!!

Hope this makes sense and hoping I get more time next time. Looking fwd to others input and experiences. I gotta say I LOVE THIS THING!!! Its so user friendly and much easier to use than the Oehler 35P chronos I have. Especially at the range and I hate to say it cause im a girl but "It's so easy a chick could do it" comes to mind...LOL!!!

Thanks for posting that! That was exactly what I had planned to do last week w the new rifle. I stupidly forgot to take the MagnetoSpeed the first day, and ran out of time on the 4th getting MVs for various loads with the unit in the (normal) 6:00 position. From other posts in this thread, apparently not everyone experiences a dramatic shift in POI with the unit attached. In my hands, the shift has consistently been very close to 1.0 MOA. Regardless, I think your test demonstrates conclusively that the change in POI is due to the position of the unit on the barrel, rather than an effect on barrel harmonics.

As you stated not everyone see's the same thing regarding POI shift. But it seems to be consistent no matter if its the same, bigger or smaller. To me anyway thats the most important thing is consistency.

Either way its been great so far and a solid easy to use tool for load developement.

Monolithic Bullets Don't Work...

Today I was shooting some of the new Predator 6.5mm Solids and could not get a reading on them.

Checked my dope initially with Hornady 120gr AMAX 6.5CM bullets and they read perfect, 3050fps overall, and then switched the Predator Solids and no reading for any of them.

So, no monolithic bullets out of this unit... no magnetic signature to record.

I'm assuming you played with the settings for zero crossing & level thresh-hold?

I had (have) a similar issue with trying to get it to read solid lead .22LR slugs. I messed with one of the settings (zero crossing, I think) but got no joy. Haven't gotten around to testing some more while twiddling the other value.

Supposedly one of the beta/pre-release testers got theirs to work with .22LR lead slugs by tweaking the settings... but it seems like solid copper would read 'better' than copper-jacketed/lead core. Been a while, but I'm assuming what triggers this thing is the disturbance in the magnetic field sensors due to the change in reluctance caused by the projectile passing over head. I know the reluctance of copper is pretty low compared to steel... but I'd think it was still better than lead. Might have to look that up...

No, I will but was basically just checking my load before I committed to the drop and saw it wasn't working. I had no time to sit and play with it as I only had a few rounds and i was more worried about accuracy then speed.

Now that I have an accurate load I can test it when load more. But I don't see the turned bullet, no core ... maybe slug for a shotgun, either way if they have a setting for the solid monolithic bullets it needs to be in there, cause I don't' see one that jumps out.

that being said you are correct. it has trouble picking up the 40gr pills from my 40x. I have to turn the threshold to 000 to get a good pickup

I've been traveling from SD to Raton for a competition all day, so I didn't see this until now. I spent a fair amount of time last weekend using the MagnetoSpeed to chronograph the Predator 176 gr [commercial] load from Southwest in a new GAP. I had no issues at all, and didn't use any "special" setting.

I ran 2 strings of 10 shots and came up with the following MV data:

Lo.......2701.....2699
Hi.......2744.....2744
Avg......2721.....2715
ES.........43.......45
SD.........11.......14

There were no misreads in either string, and the numbers line up pretty closely to what I would have expected for this load based on shooting it through a different rifle. According to the data I input into JBM, I should have been looking at a drop at 600 yd of around 13.0 MOA. I recorded an actual drop of 13.625 MOA, however, there was quite a bit of vertical dispersion (15 rounds), so there's likely some play in the drop I measured. Because of that, I cannot absolutely rule out that the readings may have been a little off on the slow side due to the metallurgy/composition of the Predator projectile. Having said that, I didn't notice anything unusual while taking these mesurements. Not really sure why mine would work with them and a different unit wouldn't.

I used mine for the first time today. I really like it. I did not see any difference in impact with the bayonet on. Only thing I broke the ladder lock buckle. It came loose and luckily all I did was break the nylon strap and ladder lock buckle. I ordered a few new ones. Is anybody having a problem keeping there's tight?any idea what I did wrong?

I have used mine on those solid barnes bullets without a problem. I did have to make some changes for my 22 though, and I shoot Wolf Match.

The Predator 176s for which I used the MagnetoSpeed to determine MV are made of a proprietary metal, I don't know exactly what it is, but it seems similar in appearance to what is called gilding metal (95% copper, 5% zinc). As I mentioned, I didn't have any apparent problems with the unit when using that projectile.

I know some people myself included wasn't so sure about different bullet compositions and how they worked with this unit. Here is some info that may be of some help to others looking at this Chrono. Hope this helps!

-Low signal setup? -> Decrease threshold level. Start with 6, then 4, then 2.

Some setups don’t give nearly as much signal to the system as others.
Usually this problem can be
solved by setting a custom trigger that has a low threshold setting,
this makes the device more sensitive.
Several conditions influence the signal strength; here is a list in
roughly the order of importance.

-1: distance from sensors (closer = more signal farther = less signal)
0.25” is a good distance for the gap between the bullet and sensor
deck. Barrels as thick as 1”
can generally be used, but the trigger threshold setting may need to
be adjusted.

-2: composition of bullet
-thick copper jacket = lots of signal
-all lead, or thin copper coating (like a 22 LR) = way less signal
-Steel core (magnetic) = high, inverted, signal (there is a special
mode since the signal is
inverted)
Lead is only about 8% as conductive as copper, which makes it much
harder to detect.
Essentially any other material used in bullets (copper, tungsten,
steels) is easier to detect.

-3: speed of bullet (fast = more signal slow = less signal)
This system was designed to work with guns shooting bullets over 1000
fps. It is often possible
to pick up bullets traveling slower than 1000 fps by reducing the
trigger threshold.

-4: bullet size (bigger = more signal smaller = less signal)
14 and 17 caliber bullets have been used successfully with the MagnetoSpeed V1.

I got nothing with the Predator Solid 6.5mm, zero reading?

Can't tell you more as I very few bullets to work with.

The barrel is a light varmint contour that read the factory Amax no problem. No muzzle device.

Once I hit the range I will try again.

I now have sent a couple hundred rounds over mine and have an observation or 2.

The thing has been flawless with my 338LM but it's a heavy gun with a brake that directs gasses up and back and away from the sensor. Didn't fail to read a single shot. NO change in poi or group size. Very slick.

Usage with my 340 Wea lightweight non-braked hunting rifle is another story. First, recoil with thing is in another league than my Lapua. It has missed some shots, the groups are so bad that determining poi isn't really possible. I can't keep the sensor in one place on the barrel. I have been reluctant to overtighten the strap for fear of the dreaded broken buckle but I make it plenty tight to stay in place on the Lapua. The guys at MS have been great. They have suggested going tighter as well as using some additional rubber under the strap to help keep things in place. They have further advised that they are developing a much more robust attachment system that will likely address some of the issues that many have had.

Stay tuned I guess.
