OK, I'm thinking about upgrading to a V3 simply to be able to use it on a railed pistol. Only concern is it kinda looks like an after thought, how well does the adapter really work?

I have no personal experience but the rail adapter looks like a firm connection: https://magnetospeed.com/collections/chronographs/products/v3-rail-adapter.
If I had the Magnetospeed, and a gun with a rail, using the rail would be my preferred way.

It works well. I do all of my pistol testing with it. I have tested it on a CZ SP01 and a P09.

Well I guess I just didn’t try enough. With the barrel being so far away from the bayonet what sensitivity do you have to run?

Hey, is GG&G the only place making the rail adapter(for the USP) now? Everything else looks like it's made in China, or discontinued.

Won't work with a P320 X5.. Tried. Bore is too high in relation to the bayonet. Works fine with the Glock.
Have you tried this? With the chrono? The rails on a Glock aren't meant to take much weight, especially cantilevered out like that. Chances are it won't function. That rail is pretty much strictly for lights. Anything tight on there or heavy will warp the dust cover enough to prevent it from cycling. If you've ever seen a Glock in slomo, you'll see that the frame twists and bends at the dustcover.
But if you have it all it may be worth a try. Perhaps resting the weight of the chrono on a bag or something would help. Good luck!
I did; and it did not work. Using the magnetospeed rail adapter, I could not rig it such that a) it would pick up the bullet; and b) the bullet would not hit the magnetospeed bayonet due to the significant upward angle the sloped rail induced. This was with multiple gen 3 glocks.
I am sure a slow motion video would have showed the whole setup vibrating all over the place.
This, and the difficulty in using magnetospeed with odd-shaped weapons, such as M1 "Garands," or some rifles with full length handguards, as well as the POI shift it sometimes induced, led me to start using a labradar instead as it seems to work with everything.
Magnetospeed is a great tool, but more limited in many ways than other chronographs.
I'll keep an eye on that as I have a couple of Gen 3 Glocks, I wish the rail adapter would work with the Sporter then I wouldn't have to get a V3.
Would it be possible to mount the magneto speed onto a solid fixture such as a tripod, then shoot over it, or is there a requirement that the unit be affixed directly onto whatever firearm's velocity is being tested?
The deck of the bayonet has to be 1/4” or so from the bore. If you’re steady I guess you can pull it off.

I bet this has happened to more magnetospeed bayonets than most will admit. I grazed mine just slightly enough to polish the finish a bit with a powder coated bullet trying to use it with a glock.
This shameful result actually occurred while I was prototyping free-floating rifle mounts for it. Emphasizes the need to really re-evaluate the clearance between shots or shot strings.
Necrothread bump. Anyone using on a Beretta LTT Elite or similar Beretta model? Same rail as the FS, A1, etc...but different from the later M9A3/4 and newer 92's like the X). It's soooo close to being spot on yet still so far away.
After scraping up the rail a bit, I figured it out. When in doubt, cut up the cheap parts. The clamp portion of the rail adapter is too long for the Beretta's rail grooves. I cut a bit off both sides of the rail adapter clamp and it works like a champ. Puts the barrel a bit less than half an inch from the top of the Magnetospeed. Hopefully that'll work with the sensitivity dialed up a bit. Will post images later for future reference.
Here is a magnetospeed mount I designed and made for my rifles, and it does work on railed pistols too. It's a bit of work but it does work well, covers a broad range of guns and packs up nicely for carrying with you.
I think I would abandon the idea of attaching to a polymer dust cover. It would seem easier for right handed shooters to have the bayonet laying on its right side supported by a fixed object while holding the gun's slide parallel to it. That way, with both eyes open, you can keep an eye on the parallelism of the gun to the bayonet and still reliably have the bullet's path close enough to the sensors.
I will be getting a LabRadar as soon as they again become available, but in the mean time I will share my MagnetoSpeed adventure which started with the V1 which had issues but still more user friendly than open chronographs at the time. I skipped the V2 and have had a couple of V3's, at least one to replace the hideous scene shown above. Around 2016 - 2017 a few of us swapping ideas regarding improving the bayonet mounting on long guns and eventually free-floating mounts to avoid POI shifts and barrel harmonic issues (as well as melting the OEM rubber v-block inserts).
Below is my 4-axis adjustable rifle configuration for the MSV3; it's a rigid system that I can adjust for various barrel lengths / diameters and suppressor widths. I can set it up at home and go to the range and mount it with two cam levers. I prefer having the primary mount above the
barrel. The primary mount is from a LaRue S.T.O.M.P. platform.

I like to use a tripod to zero pistol red dot optics for best accuracy in my hands , so I have been intellectually scheming to self, how I could efficiently acquire muzzle velocity data contemporaneously with the zeroing process. I have used a variety of tripod interfaces for the pistols, Manfrotto and more recently RRS Anvil-30 mount.
I have used construction galvanized steel thin plates, straight and angled, for a lot of mounting options of devices to tripods etc.; extremely
light and strong that can be drilled to fit various device fastener mounting points; of course paint to desired applications.
So this is version 1.0 that I have been using. Simplicity in cost (mounting plates 49 cents each @ home depot), a re-purposed Rogers optic mounting clamp ($25) and 4-40 fasteners; done. It allows for rigidly connecting the firearm (regular picatinny rail, fussy single dust cover mount location slots (Hk, Glock, Springfield Hellcat, etc) with an adjustable clamping tension screw so you can securely hold polymer frames without compressing them to the point of impairing normal cycling actions; the center-to-center MagnetoSpeed V-block threaded inserts are exactly the same as the Rogers picatinny rail!; best of all, the bottom of the configuration allows direct attachment to your
favorite tripod clamping system. The Rogers mount also has two 0.1" thick shims to fine tune the bore height relative to the sensor deck on the MagnetSpeed.

Did the Magnetospeed read all of the shots?
We're the velocities consistent with each-other, or did you see a large ES?
We're the velocities in the range they should be for the ammo are you using?
Works fine with a Gen 5 and a Gen 3. I increased the sensitivity a bit, and it registered every shot.

I've been trying to get good sub load for my AXg pro to meet minimum PF.
I did not chrono the 3.2 TG / 147 grn FP but that felt perfect for steel targets in USPSA competition. That's my next assignemnt.
I guess I should Chrono factory loaded ammo as a baseline to see if my settings are correct ?

I'm sure your getting good data from the Magnetospeed as long as the ES and consistency is good. Try the factory ammo you like or have to confirm.
I personally couldn't get anything consistent with my Magnetospeed. It'd either give me an error or wildly inconsistent readings with an occasional string of what seems plausible readings. I wish they'd come out with a pistol-specific bayonet. I had more issues with P+ factory loads, more success with my hand loads for whatever reason.
