I don't reload, just want to chrono different lots of my rimfire ... I was looking at the same thing if the $60 caldwell stuff would just meet my needs.
Shooting with a can or a barrel over 1" diameter at the muzzle? No? Get the sporter.
I had a v3, traded it in for a labradar. If Im going to spend that much I want to use it on every shot unencumbered.

I have the magneto speed V3. It a good piece of kit. I've had no problems with it during windy days at the range. Its fairly easy to set up and takedown once finished with your measurements. It is fairly compact. I would recommend that you practice the chronograph set up at home before heading out to the range.
It will affect your groups if your doing 100yd paper. I usually chrono the loads first, then do 100yd groups separately.

Basically zero. I think my LR averaged 4fps faster than my MS3 over my sample test. Close enough that it was immaterial.
FYI- some v3 models are on sale at MagnetoSpeed for $320 instead of $400, due to cosmetic blemishes only.
O/w, I just subbed this thread to learn and follow - I’m in the same boat.
I love my MS V3. I considered the Labradar, but based on my research, it would not serve me well at my usual range... because of other shooters in close proximity. With the V3, I don't have to worry about picking up other shooters' shots or missing mine.
If you never plan to shoot suppressed or with large brakes the sporter will be just fine. The V3s biggest appeal is better/easier mounting options. They make a pic rail adapter for it that I use with some of my ARs with long handguards. Zero POI shift or group alterations with it. FYI I have found that on most of my bolt guns (MS strapped to the barrel) my groups actually get noticeably better with it on. POI does shift a few inches though.

$289 would enough of a different in the usual price to put it at the top of the list.
Any idea what makes the sporter not work for rimfire? I need a chrono for both my centerfire and rimfire.
Weight on the barrel made all my groups an identical 1.5 moa large and you couldn’t tell any difference in location between any of them. Took it off and the size and location changed back and you could perform an ocw by looking at the target.
I sometimes get lazy and just shoot 500yd steel with the V3 set up on the suppressor.

With the recoil-activated trigger, available from @wildmanpiet on this site, those problems become moot for the Labradar.
Didn't exist (I don't think) back when I was going through the decision-making process... been a year or two. The LR is intriguing, to be sure. I like the tech of it. And, I like that it's not connected to the rifle at all. But, it seems rather finicky, fragile, and prone to tipping over, from what I've read. The MS V3 has no "learning curve." And, it just works. I did get a MKM mount for it to get it off the barrel.

To be honest, if you can get the MS3 off the barrel with a mount like that so that it doesn't affect group size or POI, it should work just as well as the LR
sadly I cannot find the link someone else posted about that rod that moves the magneto speed off the barrel

I dont reload and just wanted data to feed my app. Great price and works flawless. Just make sure you understand its limitations. Some great literature on their website as well.
With that said if price was no option v3 for sure.

Or even better than a LR... the V3 won't miss any shots.
Honestly, I would love to not have ANYTHING connected to the rifle. But, from what I read (a lot), the LR is a bit finicky and has a learning curve to boot. At my range, the shooters are packed in close to each other. The V3 works great in a crowded environment.

The learning curve for the LR is not steep. About 1/2 an hour and one range trip. I've got a private range but I still invested in the recoil trigger sold by Piet to make it easier to use with suppressed rifles. That works well. The Arkco mount is excellent and steady in windy conditions. I really like mine for load development and my friends don't even bother setting up their MS's anymore. Just, "hey man, bring your orange thing over here."

I wouldn't be surprised if I eventually get a LR. For now, though... the MS is working quite well.
Ive used the v3 for load development on 4 rifles. There is a POI shift but i have not seen any change in group size. Ive shot sub 0.5” groups at 100 with and without the v3 on the barrel. I do all my load development with it on the gun, then remove and fine tune the zero.
I have the spotter and I mount it to my omega with no problems. I just take the small neodymium magnets from harbor freight for less than $5 and mount them to the bayonet. Put the sensitivity to high and roll. I also use the xfr cable for my phone and it makes getting data super simple. I shot it next to my buddies lab radar in that set up and the 2 disagreed by at most 3 fps.
Not too hard to make a mount for the Sporter version either. Aluminum L channel and a few washers/bolts combined with a spare Arca clamp that I had. Sorry for the crappy pics, they are just what I had on my phone.
I don’t understand the need for these devices. I don’t care if there is a POI change while I am developing a load as long as the POI is consistent and the harmonics don’t impact my groups, which I have not seen any evidence of personally. Just curious and wanted to make sure I haven’t missed something important.
I've personally witnessed not only poi shifts but, also, changes in group size with MS attached to the barrel on 3 rifles. Two of these rifles were heavy barreled target type rifles. I'd never seen anything but poi shifts on dozens of rifles using the MS but the results on these 3 (repeated with identical loads with MS on/off) convinced me that attaching anything to the barrel does change things.
