Magpul AFG-1™ - Angled Fore Grip

Re: Magpul AFG-1™ - Angled Fore Grip

Or...even better...go over to AR15.COM and look/search around there. There is a shitload of useless knowledge and reviews about the AFG, AFG-1 and generally all things AR-15 and Magpul over there. Hell, Magpul has its own industry forum.

Much better idea to have a look there!

Re: Magpul AFG-1™ - Angled Fore Grip

This is the consensus over at AR-15. Those who are the Magpul whores over there love it. Those that arent dont find a use for it. Unless youve specifically adopted Magpul's ideas when it comes to shooting (Dynamics course) this specific piece of hardware wont do you any good. This was made on the Dynamics side of the house to further help those taking their courses adjust to their methods of shooting and teaching. I personally dont like it but think its a good peice of engineering, but I hate to shoot with my arm fully extended like they do because im a monster (6'5") and both Travis and Chris are midgets. Id need a 20" long forend for their style to work, and thats just not feasible in terms of efficiency for me. If you like to shoot strait armed it may work for you, if you dont you might not like it. But to each their own.

Re: Magpul AFG-1™ - Angled Fore Grip

Thanks Smithc6 for the reality check. When I looked at the pictures showing the grip in use with the shooter’s arm extended, it seemed like a clumsy position to shot from to me too. I try to open to new options, but Magpul Dynamics shooting style of driving the gun does not work for me. I find I do best when I find a position that feels both natural and relaxed to me.

Very well stated.

I am 5'9" and not a fan of the method either. I understand the concept but just can't bite off on it as a good tool for my tool box. If you subscribe to the method then the Magpul AFG is an ergonomic tool that will make life a bit easier.

Re: Magpul AFG-1™ - Angled Fore Grip

I have one and like it.

If you will use it depends on your style of shooting. When I was running a VFG I never used a "beer can" grip. I always ran my hand high on the grip with my thumb forward. The angle my hand naturally fell at mimicked the angle that the AFG was designed for. So when I saw the AFG the light went on.

I got one and tried it out. I found it very comfortable. Now when using it in training, sims and for live I found that my thumb will naturally wrap around the top of the forend. This feels like a very secure grip. It's fast to transition and I don't feel like I loose any control of the weapon. When doing mag changes I come back on the grip faster than when I was using a VFG.

I don't subscribe to new stuff because it's new. I will try it out and see if it has merit. If it does, I will adopt it. If not, I move it on down the road.

I don't do this stuff to look cool. It's a job. If it don't make my job easier, then I have no use for it.

In this case the AFG works for me. It seems to work for some of the other guys on my team and they are definitely not "into" the Koolaid. Will it work for you? I don't know. It's cheap enough to try and ditch if you don't like.

Glad I could help. I have a few friends who blindly follow Magpul and Costas beard. The analogy I use with them relates to what I do for a living. I manage a running specialty store and hope to open my own some day. Anyways, on a daily basis we get people coming in saying "my friend wheres this shoe and says it the best in the world so I want to try it." My response to them is your friend is completely different than you. Same thing here I think. Everyone is different and will have different shooting styles. Just because Magpul has a huge following right now and its the fad, doesnt mean its the only correct way of shooting. I can be just as accurate and fast doing it my way, as long as I train consistently.
